With both the state and city facing a serious budget crunch, the city schools are now looking at their fifth round of budget cuts in the last two years. Mayor Bloomberg has asked the Department of Education to cut its budget midyear by 1.5 percent, and both he and Gov. Paterson warn that steeper cuts are not too far in the future.
We want to know how what’s really at risk at schools across the city. Add a comment on this page to document what’s on the chopping block at your school. Include an address when you post your comment and the information you leave will be displayed on the map at the right. Read more about why we are collecting information this way.
Please note: Comments from before November 2009 reflect the budget cuts that were made before the start of the 2009-2010 school year.

thanks for doing this!
Show on Map»PS 24 had a librarian cut last year (parents volunteered to run the library). The job has been posted for the upcoming school year, but this is one of those things that may fall through due to budget cuts.
Show on Map»No pre-calc for juniors unless a student qualifies for honors. No 3rd or 4th year language class unless a student qualifies for honors. School day shortened to 9 periods, as opposed to 10 to 11.
Show on Map»The Clinton School for Writers and Artists (MS260) will lose its art and drama teachers if not allowed to hire F status teachers. We are an arts school, but this would eliminate much of our arts programming!
Show on Map»Midwood High School is cutting back on the number of electives students are allowed to take. It’s sad, because the school offers a lot of amazing courses.
Show on Map»My school is M.S. 54 Booker T. Washington middle school which is home to the CORE and Delta programs. Our budget cuts come to almost $800,000 and are almost 10%. We are having an emergency rally tommorrow morning (June 9th) at 7:30 a.m. to protest these obscene cuts. Please come support our school. The UFT, who has organized this last minute rally, is hoping to hold rallies like this for other schools in District 3. We need to take action.
Show on Map»To add to my last post, the school is located at Columbus between 107 and 108th Streets.

The budget cuts at East Side Middle School have forced the elimination of its Drama and Model UN program. The administration of this school is an extremely visionary and innovative one, and the budget cuts compromise the school’s mission to integrate the arts into ESMS’s other curricula.
Show on Map»MS 54 also stands to lose their Model UN program, whose team has won the top award each year they have gone. But that pales in comparison to the eleven teaching positions that we may lose if we don’t receive emergency funds. As it stands, we will have administrators going back into the classroom to teach (including the principal!) and we also will lose some of our periods in math and other subjects which will be disastrous. It is just a debacle.

Our school is facing the complete decimation of its heralded arts programs since our arts teachers are part time and will no longer be able to work under that status. All other part timers will have to go including those who have helped prep for tests and assist lower achievers. In addition we face the loss of at least 3 full-time teachers which could lead to the consolidation of classes within grades and greatly increased class sizes. It’s depressing, to say the least.
Show on Map»I forgot: no more Librarian either.
Show on Map»Our school is being cut and losing 5 teachers as well as a librarian and math coach. Also they cut back on after school programs and will have bigger class sizes.
Show on Map»PS 257 is not replacing any of the teachers that are leaving which will result in larger class sizes, and will have much less money for after school programs for children. Williamsbrug, Brooklyn
Show on Map»We lost 13 teachers, one AP through retirement who we cannot afford to replace, four paraprofessionals, three school aides and a family worker. For a K to 8 school of about 950 students I will have two AP’s, six school aides, no dean of discipline, two familiy workers for attendance outreach, 1 school secretary for a staff of over 100. I will have NO special programs that we previously paid for such as poets for middle school, dance for elementary school. Morale is terrible and the results would appear to be devastating - all this after making significant progress over the past three years.
Show on Map»Once I excess 5 teachers and two para’s I am at a balanced zero budget. No money for supplies, after school programs etc. My cut was $350,000.00

Show on Map»We are cutting deans that have helped make the school safe, cutting AP calc, not replacing a retiring counselor, cancelling all of the shows we produce, reducuing senior programs by not offering fourth year in math and science. We do not have Titlte I, so this regressive tax is decimating our ability to provide high quality instruction
Show on Map»As of September 2009, I will be excessing 11 teachers. There will be no funds available for afterschool programs of any kind. We are operating on a bare bone budget.

Show on Map»our school, Murry Bergtraum High School, is losing 3 social workers, 2 guidance counselors, 10 teachers, and 3 paraprofessionals. All of this in spite of the fact that we will still have about 2500 students in the fall. They’d never settle for this in the suburbs!
Show on Map»BenJamin N. Cardozo High School is excessing 12-17 teachers most of them in math and science and the enrollment is going up. This budget was slashed very hard. Looks like the teachers were the first to go.
Show on Map»Budget cuts- please! If KleinBloomberg would simply charge market value rent to all the charter schools located within DOE schools, (and DOE for the low cost of $1 a year provides school safety, custodial services and Food services- to name a few) we would not only have no need to make ANY budget cuts, we would be able to provide adequate and appropriate staff and resources for enough of the so-called “failing schools” to turn them around and make them viable competition for those same charter schools- without having to “skim” our students, and ignore Special Needs and ESL Learners!
