So, kids are taking ‘important’ tests, which will destroy teacher’s careers, but kids can still be promoted if they fail…..um…..

    From Equity and Excellence report:

“To ensure meaningful and fair evaluations, evidence of student learning should not rely solely on standardized tests. Policies that use such measures in that inappropriate manner tend to misclassify the competence of teachers, as well as reduce the morale of teachers, create disincentives to teach the highest-need students, undermine public confidence in schooling and encourage teacher-preparation programs and schools to focus on raising test scores rather than on teaching children important concepts with a rich curriculum that includes the arts and humanities in addition to core subjects.”

Do you think it would help you to be an effective teacher to have students in your class who are 2, 3, 4 or more years over-age for their grade?

Also note that VAM doesn’t penalize you just because kids fail the test. They could fail the test, spectacularly even, and you could still come out smelling like a rose if you’ve moved them forward more than the model expected.

If they go to summer school they aren’t held back so they won’t be over-age. And, they would come into the new grade stronger.

  • Larry Littlefield

This will just make it easier for the next Mayor to go back to social (actually fiscal) promotion whole hog. Another step on the journey into the past.

  • MrKotter

If the kids fail spectacularly, and the teacher could come out smelling like a rose, then just what is the point of all this? Why have VAM at all?
