On evals due date, Cuomo breaks silence to repeat ultimatum

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has stayed mostly quiet during the lead-up to the deadline he set for districts to adopt new teacher evaluations or lose funding. But now that the due date has arrived, he has released a stern statement repeating the ultimatum he laid out a year ago today:

Today is the final deadline for the handful of school districts, including New York City, that have failed to get their teacher evaluation systems in place. Please hear me — there will be no extensions or exceptions. Since we established one of the strongest teacher evaluation models in the nation last year, 98% of school districts have successfully implemented them. The remaining districts and their unions have until midnight tonight to do the same or they will forfeit the increase in education aid they have been counting on and both parties will have failed the children they serve.

New York City is one of six districts that had not submitted even a first draft of its evaluation plan by last week. But as of last night, city and union negotiators were still locked in a room trying to work out the remaining details, some of which seem to be significant.

“They’re definitely discussing serious stuff in there,” a union spokesman told GothamSchools late Wednesday.

A meeting of the union’s Delegate Assembly, which must approve a deal if one is made, is set for five hours from now. If there is no deal by then, UFT President Michael Mulgrew told members last week, the meeting will be used to plan an offensive against Mayor Bloomberg.

NO, Mr.Cuomo.  YOU have failed the children of NYC by using financial blackmail to further your personal political agenda.  This evaluation system will affect thousands of lives and livelihoods for years to come and is NOT subject to your petty political agenda or Bloomberg’s petulance.
I was willing to be cooperative and try and keep an open mind about an acceptance of a deal by tonight, however this statement has forced me to change my position.  I hope NO agreement is reached.  The funds were a scam anyway.

I agree. This is B.S. but the media loves Cuomo, he gets the proper spotlight. He’s dead wrong on this. Using $$$ to destroy just like Race to the Bottom! Obama driven death trap!

“The remaining districts and their unions have until midnight tonight to do the same or they will forfeit the increase in education aid they have been counting on.”

I certainly hope the City of New York did not include in this year’s budget money it did not actually have.

So now who’s hurting NYC school kids more – bus drivers or Cuomo?

  • Michael M (parent still)

Budgets include forecast revenues as a matter of routine. What might not have been routine is that the two sides couldn’t cut a deal with such stakes.

Negotiations are dead , there will not be a new teacher evaluation deal.

    Like the taxi medallion sales?

  • BloombergMustGo

Cuomo.  Bus drivers never had a say in the rates the city paid, that was between the city and the companies.  The drivers and matrons, like the teachers, are the victims of these incompetent politicians and thier pissing matches.

Just walked out to get a little fresh air. It’s official, there is a deal. It will be sent through. It’s over.

  • Lorraineandrews

It’s OFFICIAL. Just got Mulgrews letter to UFT members. No deal!!!

Terrible decision of city leadership. You would think they do not have empathy for the children of New York. You would think they represent those on 5th Avenue and disregard the remainder of our cities residents. You would think they can’t understand the bread and butter issues of common New Yorkers. You would think they are represented by Mayor Bloomberg, who does not understand what is taking place here in New York. Maybe the city is ready for change, maybe we can not have new leadership fast enough, and maybe Mayor Bloomberg can not have influence in this next election cycle. I hope so. It is in my cities best interest.

90 percent!!!!!!!!!!!! of all other school districts submitted and were approved teacher evaluations with a sunset of 1 year.  UFT offered a 2 year sunset and bloomy said no.  When bloomy was questioned that other districts only had a 1 year sunset, bloomy, bloomdoe, bloomterd responded by saying the other deals are a sham….LOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLROLLING OVER

  • Lynn3265

This mayor might be a troll….If you squeeze his head it might pop off revealing some sort of freakish looking brain tangled with wires,,,,clearly not human

  • Angelogchs

My father always said, if there is money on the table grab it and then we will figure out how to split it. The Mayor blew it, that money could have had immediate impact on schools. Such an ego, never wants to bend over or give in and admit he was wrong.
