Former Turnaround Teacher
The Student’s First report really tells us nothing, other than in most schools the vast majority of teachers are recieving Satisfactory Ratings. I am sure that in almost any company in the world (since they love to compare schools to corporations) a CEO would be extremely pleased to find out that less than 5% of his/her employees were doing a poor job.
If the report wanted to be accurate then they should have looked at data over the past few years, not one year. They also needed to see what the principals were rated in these schools, and how long these principals have been in charge. If a principal has been running a school for more than 5 years and 30% of the teachers are recieving U ratings then I question why that Principal is still running the school. Obviously they are doing a poor job at both hiring teachers and supporting them. It only takes two years to get an “bad” teacher fired, so why have these “bad” teachers not been removed by the principal and replaced with young ideallistic TFAers. Those TFA teachers are exactly the type that “Student’s First” wants in the classrooms and I thought that TFA was suppose to be getting them into the highest needs schools. Unless of course all these teachers getting U ratings are in fact young teachers straight out of TFA who are unprepared to manage classrooms with our highest needs students…
