Hey, Mr. Mayor --

I know a DOE tenured teacher who survived the 3020a attempted-lynching process, who's got a very distinguished proven student achievement record, near perfect attendance, etc..

(This is despite the 3020a charges of "incompetence." The school where he was charged has stopped offering what he taught; they've not replaced him and they're not looking to replace him. They've thus dumbed down the curriculum instead, despite the fact that his students had the best Regents passing rate among all comparable schools in the borough.)

He's certified in Chemistry and General Science, AND in Special Ed.

He's in the ATR pool (just started there this September).

I hear you need him.

You're paying him anyway.

(Strange that you think it's better to shlep him around from week to week as a sub., than to allow that salary money you're already paying him to actually give students the maximum benefit from his expertise.)

P.S. -- Oh, I forgot: He's makes too much -- 12th yr. in the system, masters-plus-30, TENURED.
Can you spell: U-n-i-o-n B-u-s-t-i-n-g ????

P.P.S. -- No biggie: He's loved and appreciated everywhere he's been assigned anyway. They see the talent, proven experience with the children, and commitment that his former principal was blind to. (A.K.A.-- ...his former principal wanted to cut her salary costs -- good for some kind of feather in her cap or a bonus or something. And she resented that he was so respected [perhaps more respected than she is?] and That was more important than the kids getting a quality education.)

I know plenty of teachers who are certified in special education who don't get hired because they're more expensive than Teaching Fellows. I've also seen the same with speech therapists who are certified but have to work for agencies because the system for hiring them within the DoE is such a mess.

Why not use working as a paraprofessional a pathway for certification? We waste the talent of some of our most experienced employees. Just recently, a para who is 5 credits short of special education certification told me she stopped her classes this semester because she couldn't charge anymore to her credit card! When I helped her look into it, there were no programs available to support her. Yet, across the hallway a Teaching Fellow is barely managing to survive her first weeks in a city self-contained classroom, having had no idea what she was getting herself into, in addition to no training.

The Urban Teacher Residency (UTR) programs are highly successful in retaining teachers, and expensive - currently funded with federaral dollars. There are a number of sites in NYC. It sounds like Suransky is talking about a UTR-type program run from within the DOE. Currently UTR sites have relationships with universities. Its basically an internship model - worthwhile trying a pilot especially in shortage license areas.

So I guess this would mean that you will no longer need any degree to teach the children of NYC. That will save lots of $$ on salaries because salaries would be less for those without a degree - or would they be more because they were trained by strong teachers for who knows how long...... As with any program, you come to the job with the basics and learn on the job what each school needs from you (or each businesse). But in most businesses there is a introductory/training programto get you started. hmmm, Isn't the DOE run like a business??? I have seen so many teachers pushed out the door because they didn't kiss the principals ring and tried to teach out students. This sounds like it could turn into indoctrination.

Just curious if anyone realizes this would be a return to a discredited system the City had in the 70's that was soundly rejected by the Feds and in fact led to the NCLB requirement for exceptionally qualified Teachers . TFA and the reformers have been pounding and scheming ways around this since it started -does it really make logical sense
