Kristen, I think you may right that there was far less pressure a few years ago. I taught English at Stuy in the 1990s and found the students to be very engaged and curious. But then I wasn't teaching math or science and never used "objective" tests so my experience may not have been typical. I think that the culture at Hunter High School was and is quite different, based on my daughter's experience there. That may be due in part to the very different entrance exam at Hunter where passing the essay portion is required. It also may be due to the very difference means of selecting the teaching staff at the two schools.

Personally , i despise cheating, it is so unfair for those who deliberately studied just to earn a high mark. the academic advantage got from cheating is useless with no credibility at all. Students like this are just fooling themselves.

I was hoping for a better response. This kid sounds 100% unapologetic. As a Stuyvesant graduate ('98), I fully support this kid's expulsion. Cheating is academic suicide unless you can convince others that you can be deemed trustworthy again. Sounding like a smarta-- and insulting your teachers in interviews won't help.

Problem I see in injecting any ethics into these privileged brats is that the whole DOE cheats- even the Mayor who gets around the law for a 3rd term

Hi, current Stuyparent,
I graduated from Stuyvesant HS in '86 and my son graduated two years ago. I don't know how involved you are, but your estimation of 99% of kids at Stuy don't cheat is the complete reverse of the situation. While I never had the guts to cheat (besides the occasional roving eye), back in the day, we weren't in a pressure cooker to be perfect. These kids talk nonstop about outsmarting their buddies and getting into ivy leagues. I had a difficult time explaining to my son that there may be better schools than the classic club we hear about, which may be a better home for him. Unfortunately, what these counselors don't go over is that yes the school looks great with an additional kid going to Harvard, but kids shouldn't be pushed into devoting so much time and energy for something that looks like a badge of honor. Almost all of the kids and perhaps your kid as well has in someway 'cheated' whether it be looking up and briefly glancing at the paper next to him or her, or involving banned electronics to do so. To say that you are a 'stuy parent' who thinks most of the students don't cheat is hypocritical. There were probably dozens of cheating rings going on, and this kid's ring just happened to get caught. The principal came to the room because he was tipped off by another student. Participant or passerby, cheating is so commonplace in Stuyvesant HS, that even Principal Teitel, hero of 9/11 who most likely lightly reprimanded previous offenders, had to resign b/c the evidence from all of the years stacks against him. Hopefully the next generation of Stuyvesant students learn from this example, and don't give the new principal a hard time.

I am curious about the process by which the student was "expelled" from Stuyvesant. Principals alone do not have the power to transfer students. Clearly he broke rules and deserves a stiff punishment, however how did Teitel transfer him anywhere?

"As of this writing, Nayeem has been sitting out the start of the school year, not yet enrolling at another high school in hopes that the DOE will relent and allow him to return to Stuyvesant. He’s hopeful, but far from confident, that will happen. "

He CHEATED to get ahead while 99% of the school studied (3000+ kids at Stuy).

imo - Nayeem Ahsan is a "Narcissist". It's all about him and he doesn't care who else get hurt in the process of his cheating.

Hope that the people at DOE have enough 'brains' and 'guts' to make an example of Nayeem Ahsan by expelling him and suspending his 66 co-conspirators.
