"And while founder Deborah Kenny explains in a book she published this
summer that she wished the timing had been right to get free space from
the city, something offered frequently by Joel Klein, Bloomberg’s first
and formative chancellor, her schools have always operated in private
space.
“We were forced to divert some time and energy for the difficult
process of putting a facility together,” Kenny told reporters today. "

What? Joel Klein and now Walcott have both been very generous w/ giving free taxpayer-funded space to Deborah Kenny, who personally earns more than $400K. One branch of HVA is in District 5,
in the PS 194 building at 244 W. 144 St. The other is in D4 in the IS 45
building at 509 W. 129 St. Both have been there for years. A little fact checking please, especially
given the source.

Opening day at my kids' school was terrific. The first day of school is a good day to acknowledge something that gets lost amid the many larger edu-debates, which is that it takes a staggering amount of time, energy, and dedication simply to have schools and classrooms ready for students every day. A toast and best wishes for the year ahead to everyone who has a part in making it happen.

At the PS 9 (Brooklyn) First Day Celebration, lots of happy kids and parents! The principal described a new grant the school received and an associated initiative under way at the school - the Whole Child Initiative. http://www.ascd.org/programs/The-Whole-Child/Whole-Child-Network.aspx I don't know anything about it, but the administration seemed fired up and that is always good!

Gotham schools, your relentless pandering to Walcott is sickening. Gotham Schools should be about students, teachers and parents. That should have been your priority for scheduling visits. Not brown nosing the second worst chancellor in NYC history.
Also interesting is how Walcott found a school "sweltering" and stepped outside to cool off. Were the students and teachers allowed to step outside and cool off? Are the students expected to function in the sweltering heat? Why is the school sweltering when millions are being wasted on Bloomberg's phony contractors? Why does Gotham Schools ignore all the failings of Bloomberg and his cronies?
Since Ms. Cramer had her nose glued to Walcott's butt, she also only visited "new" schools. How about the hundreds of "old" schools suffering with overcrowding and budget cuts?

Overall, a very nice first day back on my end. Good to be back in the morning routine, and good to see the staff again. Fourth-grade daughter was in high spirits, thrilled to see her friends again and excited for the new year after a summer of swimming, musical theater, and arguments about doing multiplication tables. After a great pre-K year, my gentle son was wary about kindergarten, as am I. Great early-education teachers are truly skilled and gifted.
