I have been reading literature all day on Mr. Tough's book, as well as similar contemporary research by Sir Ken Robinson and others.... I am, at the moment, absolutely dumbfounded as to why COMPETITIVE ACADEMIC DEBATE has not been discussed. at all. When I read this piece, I was on the verge of falling out of my chair... Even with all of the awesome things described about chess competition in this article, interscholastic/ urban debate leagues and competitions are hundreds of times more effective, as well as universally applicable. Please pass this info along. Wow.

"If you believe that your school’s mission or your job as a teacher is simply to convey information, then it probably doesn’t seem necessary to subject your students to that kind of rigorous self-analysis."

As a teacher who believes as Mr. Tough does, that my job is to challenge students to identify weaknesses through rigorous self-examination, it's always a little disheartening to read statements like the one above that elude to a kind of false equivalence. Is there really a large countervalent group of teachers who think and teach this way? Or, does the author need to manufacture such a group in order to make his primary examples appear more striking by comparison?
