Either you get paid less per week but have 13 more weeks of paid vacation, or you get paid more per week but have 13 fewer weeks of paid vacation. In both cases you make the same amount of money and work the same number of weeks. In other words, for God's sake, who cares.

Teachers' summer vacations are not paid; a teacher's contract does not cover the summer. Arguing that teachers work fewer than the standard 2080 hours (40 hours per week multiplied by 52 weeks) is valid, but if you're going to claim that summer hours are paid, then you have to give teachers credit for the full 2080 hours, in which case I make $17 an hour.(Assuming I work 40 hours per week.)

So tell me, also, how many other professionals have 13 weeks of paid vacation a year? As a retired teacher I also spent some of my summer in workshops and courses, some fees were reimbursed, others weren't. Your courses sound very interesting and I'm sure you got some personal benefit out of them too.

I am a Physical Education teacher and this summer I have taken at my own expense a comedy writing workshop to help me develop a much clearer and succinct communication style. A course on compas and map reading because I hope to take students out into the wilderness this year. I attended a series of Chess workshops I would like to get a chess club going in my school. I am also spending two days in Boston for a Project adventure work shop in order to develop more team building and trust activities into my Phys Ed and Health lessons.

So tell me how many other professions use their personal time to develop their work skills without reimbursement.

I like this series! Articles like this walk the walk of demonstrating respect for teachers by highlighting the hard work that most of us do, in one way or another, every summer -- and the fact that it's often paid for out-of-pocket. Thanks.
