Perhaps, but New Visions walks a fuzzy line between a branch of the DOE and a for profit corporation. According to 2010 IRS form 990 (available at guidestar.org), New Visions brought in $5 million dollars as a partnership support network. They also reported that 50% of their $89 million revenue comes from public institutions (i.e. taxes).

So it seems like our tax dollars fund interesting programs (and maybe effective or maybe ineffective) programs like ED designlab, at least one person writing press releases about ED design lab and some really well compensated executives. Robert Hughes, New Visions President, makes $450,000 (total compensation) a year and there are 3 other executives also making more than the the chancellor.

Questions about cost and scale are always good to keep in mind for New Visions.

I don't know - wouldn't teachers with great ideas to such ends be better off finding avenues to get them out there where they retain ownership and get their fair share of profits?
