The ugly truth is that there must be a pipeline from 8th to high school for undeserving students. Social promotion always has and will always exist for no other reason but the hide the filthy truth that the DOE surely knows: If the city was truly dedicated and willing to not promote students who did not deserve it, the city would have thousands and thousands of students left behind – literally. The way I see it, that just can’t happen. It costs too much money and it’s just EMBARASSING.

I never got it in the past, still don’t get it and most likely wont get it until someone makes it plain and simple for me. Most of these turnarounds are on the high school level correct? Why aren’t the middle school and primary levels scrutinized more? I mean, if students enter high school years below appropriate level, what in heaven’s name can high school teachers really do? Shouldn’t the lower levels be looked at for passing them through? Oh, but I guess if they don’t pass them along, you would have in one point in time THOUSANDS of 20 something eight graders.

Felicia- you are what we call a union drone. You just listen to their words and vote what they tell you. Do you know what an ATR is? Can you explain how ATR came to be? Can you tell me what the union has done to help these struggling schools so they cannot be closed? My union person said we should pass everyone. What do you think. If you can answer these questions i would be quite surprised. One more question- if you file a lawsuit, why would you go along with the plan? IF you file a lawsuit does that not mean you would expect to win because you are right???

Educational Partnership Organizations were given millions of dollars by the DOE to turnaround schools with no results over the past year. They selected new principals and acted like corporate superintendents.These “companies” even had the opportunities to remove sitting principals. If the EPO’s are no longer being paid millions by the DOE as a result of the lawsuit, who now gets to determine the which principal’s stay and which ones go? Will it be Institute of Student Achievement , High Schools That Work, Diplomas Now or some other shadowy DOE entity?
I believe that the students and teachers within the DOE deserve the opportunity to work with top flight instructional leaders in great schools. We need to rethink our instructional leadership within NYC because our students should have opportunity, not confusion!

Please move the EPO’s into the dustbin of history and find high quality people to lead our schools. Our high needs schools cannot not be hijacked by retirees and “out of towners”!

What an absolutely inane statementt by Mr. Schwartz. The City was rightfully caught doing something illegal, illogical and destructive, AGAIN!!!!!!!!
The UFT didn’t set this up! And they had an obligation to fight it! That’s it!
Maybe there’s some collusion, but that angle only makes Schwarz’s statement even more idiotic!
The Deformation League is on the wrong side of the law, history, research and reality! If they think power, money and believing they are right and smarter than everyone else is everything, they will soon find themselves dead wrong, deceased by fallacy, following a light that is really an insect zapper, deranged and demised, met maker who is not a billionaire and doesn’t particularly care for money, late and dislocated, passed on to the plane of incorrectitude, the world of illogic, mistook the lathe of heaven for a lobotomizing instrument . . . Okay, you get the idea.

But he is so typical of so many of these so called Principals who try to lick the you know whats of people like Bloomberg and Walcott. But he should be reminded what happened to Eric Naderstern. When they don’t need you any longer, they’ll put you out on your rear end.

Oh by the way, Mr. Schwartz, you write turnaround is not such a bad thing and list all the things done under turnaround. Of course all those same things could be done under restart or transformation including getting the SIG funding. How many of your staff did you move out, sir?

This all seems very fishy. If i had to bet i would bet that the city will win the appeal. It seems like it is all fixed. The union and the city were in on this process together. This seems like a ploy by the union to look good. The union is silent. They went along with the process. Why? It just makes no sense. I do not trust the UFT nor will i ever until they change leadership. The UFT leaders are about themselves, not their members.

Better yet, he is going against his own union and members. But rest assured Mr. Schwartz, if you do wind up staying as principal there, once you realize you cannot “turnaround” your school, you will be crying to the union when the headhunters come after YOU!!!

Since the mayor and the chancellor were in favor of the turnaround model and they decided to replace the existing principals with new administrators and now those administrators are in limbo, with the renamed schools being returned to its original names, then it is time for those new administrators to be renamed as ATRs. Let them travel from school to school every week and in the hopes that they will be hired to take over the school. Sometimes karma can be so bittersweet!

Evan Schwartz’ comment that the “UFT,CSA …made it harder” for him to plan what is happening at his school in the Fall after the DOE lost its arbitration case, is sadly typical of the attitude of the ed and school bureaucracy running this city. Presumably his planning problems are the UFT’s fault… for going to court and winning! The comment is indicative however, why they should all be thrown out of office or fired after the next mayoral election. Hope everyone has their voter registration in order, yep.
