Pencils. Before I became a teacher I always wondered why teachers complained why they couldn't afford to give students pencils. Good pencils cost about 10c, teachers make a marginally decent income, so why would they complain about not being able to afford giving students pencils? After I became a teacher, I understood what the public doesn't know. In the turnaround so called "failing" school, I am routinely asked for pencils ten times or more by students every day. If you don't give them one, they don't take notes. You can give them one today, but most likely they will not have it tomorrow or if they do, others will not. You can ask for ID cards on loan (a teachable moment), but that takes class time and you end up with a lot of unclaimed ID cards. Ten pencils a day cost only $1, not much you say. But multiplied by 180 schools days, it adds up. And that's just pencils. So $100 ain't much, but its a start. Now about about giving each student a classroom computer.....

Something is better than nothing----I think I spent over $100 on dry erase markers alone for doing desk top projects on the dry erase tops I put on the desks -at my expense. I don't know a single Teacher that hasn't spent over $300 for student supplies-- too bad the DOE doesn't appreciate us.
