Mary is right on. Mr. Jeffries represents his views on this issue as measured, and this seems to me to be the ideal situation to test his true support for community schools. In fact, for *anyone* here who feels strongly about the sustainability of neighborhood schools in face of the rapid expansion of charter schools/co-locations in NYC, this is your chance to provide concrete support!

PS9 is doing wonderfully, despite multiple progressive charter and magnet "options" already in the district, but it obviously needs appropriate funds to allow it to keep moving onward and upward, especially in the face of the charter marketing juggernauts soon to arrive. To see what I mean, check out the HUGE number of extremely deep-pocketed charter chains potentially opening up next year, all intending to co-locate in district schools in or nearby the PS9 district, and most intending to target the "cream" of the district while leaving the ELL, special education, and most at-risk kids behind: http://www.newyorkcharters.org/documents/June2012NewSchoolApprovals-Release.pdf

Do indeed slip the letter under Mr. Jeffries' door and remind all your neighbors/the entire PS9 community of what's at stake in all upcoming elections. This isn't about Charters=Bad, Traditional Public Schools=Good, it's about being as informed as possible re: the politics/business of education in NY State/City...the two are inseparable.
I sit in phase-out hearings all the time and listen to parents who are incredulous, "...why didn't they tell us?" "...how did we get here?" After over a decade of Mayoral control we can't sit around blaming everyone else for not advocating on our children's behalf...Start advocating for your child today by knowing exactly where all your local elected officials stand on Public Education in your borough, NY City and NY State.
