more teachers per student, and teaching reading at the level where the kids are at  is better than aussies

  • http://www.facebook.com/maggielee.peterson Maggie Lee Peterson

My mentor during my first year of teaching was an AUSSIE and I am forever grateful.  I learned so much from her and continue to appreciate the help they give in reading, math, and science.  No complaints from this teacher about PD money being spent on their services.

I’ve never found AUSSIES helpful. When you have perfectly competent staff developers in the building already, who deeply understand the culture of the school, AUSSIES seem like a huge waste of $$.

  • Miss Eyre

Although I’m usually skeptical of outside providers, I have to agree with Maggie regarding my experience with AUSSIE.  The AUSSIE consultant at my old school was patient, thoughtful, and thorough.  She modeled, with regular classes in the school with the real kids we taught, everything she suggested, and the kids and teachers alike appreciated her presence.  She didn’t come in and read a PowerPoint at us and make us feel like we were lousy teachers.  She actually listened and cared and taught us how to continue to offer support to each other.  You could do a lot worse for PD providers than the AUSSIEs.
