The Tom Allon piece is bizarre. He says he wants smaller class sizes, less teacher turnover, better teacher qualification, better facilities like gyms and science labs, and bigger budgets. But then he concludes by saying he wants more charter schools, as if he fails to realize that the charter expansionists premise their cause precisely on denying everything he says we need. It’s a disturbing level of ignorance on display.

This is a great Remainders!! Jeffries says no reformer money, and Allon writes a piece that sounds vaguely like talking points from my union, circa 2002.
I could get used to this!!

Jeffries is only saying no Ed reform $$ because word has been getting out about how beholden he really is to the charter school lobbyists.
StudentsFirstNY is run by former top Bloomberg Albany lobbyist Micah Lasher and is a barely disguised cheerleader for mayoral control of public schools. Yes, the richest man in NYC, Mayor Bloomberg, wants to private NYC public schools and get even richer. Worse, he wants to create the best schools in the most affluent, white areas and call this “choice.” (Yep, that Micah Lasher, the flyer creator who made the homophobic/racist/nasty “Sharpton Farting on Ferrer” flyer that got Mayor Bloomberg elected in the first place.)
Also, Bloomberg appointed his wealthy buddy to overhaul CUNY and make it a technical training school and students who want to learn to think and read actual classic texts need to go to a private college.
This arrangement ill serves the vast majority of NYC students who attend public schools. It isn’t fair to condemn the majority of children to poor schools, while outsourcing education to privately-run schools–that all major studies show cannot compete with public schools. This is an excuse to enrich a few rich people, aka Mayor Bloomberg and hedge fund investors involved in StudentsFirst NY.
No, privatization/corporatization of our schools! “No!” to the hedge fund investor/Democratic Party machine created/funded political campaign of Hakeem Jeffries! Vote Charles Barron for improved public schools for ALL our students, where parents and communities have real input and power to improve our children’s education.

So true. People should check out Hakeem Jeffries (and Charles Barron’s) donations records to see who is funding their campaigns. Charles Barron’s campaign seems very volunteer-driven with scores parents of public school children flyering and attending rallies. But, it seems like Jeffries campaign is “Buy a Campaign” 101.
Anyone know of any analyses of donors to StudentsFirst? Are they hedge fund backers of primate charter schools or public school parents or ?
