Long Island City charter school teachers bid to unionize

Teachers at another charter school in Queens have voted to unionize, the teachers union announced today.

The school, the Academy of the City Charter School in Long Island City, joins 10 other schools that have moved to unionize since 2007, when the union began its campaign to unionize the charter teaching force. The school is a an off-shoot of Our World Neighborhood Charter School, which has existed for a decade in Astoria, Queens, and is not unionized.

“We made this decision because we believe it is critical for us to establish a formal collective voice within our school community,” Academy of the City’s teachers told the school’s board of trustees in a letter sent last week.

The Academy of the City opened in September 2011 with 12 teachers, one guidance counselor, and about 100 students in its Kindergarten and first grade. It plans to expand to a full elementary school by 2015.

Congratulations. Now you can officially be sold out just like the rest of us in the UFT.

  • Don

Welcome to the union. Maybe the rest of us rank and file members can learn something from your organizing. Together we can revitalize our union so it is a democratic union that works for all member and not just for the 13%. Bravo Queens Teachers!

When people are brave enough to stand up for themselves in this way , they deserve our support, respect, and encouragement.  I can’t be sure, but I’ll bet you’re one of those lazy complainers with no history of organizing or activism in the workplace who is never satisfied with anything the union does.  Your snide remarks are not the least bit constructive and would best be kept to yourself.

I have plenty of differences with the UFT leadership, and have never voted for the UNITY ticket, but I extend my sincerest congratulations them and the staff at the Academy for taking this important step.

    Good luck!

shut the school down now… if you are on the board shut it down

I was being sarcastic in my remark. And you are incorrect in your accusation of me. I inform, guide, and help new and veteran teachers alike regarding current education politics and UFT policies. In fact, I informed many teachers during the last election and some of them, along with I voted for James Eterno of the ICE caucus. I know the UFT contract better than our chapter chair and teachers come to me when they have a question regarding it. I have been a teacher for close to 20 years and I have never seen as many rights lost as I have seen since 2005. (Things are getting worse and not better for the teaching profession) I am not a “lazy complainer with no history of organizing or activism in the work[lace who is never satisfied with anything the union does”. I have tons of respect for the majority of UFT staff who are dedicated professionals who have helped me with certification, licensing, and welfare fund queries. However, the massive amount of secret, backdoor dealings that have been taking place with higher level UFT leaders have sold us out on a level never seen before. If you do not believe that your teaching career/workplace conditions are being sold out to big government and big business, then I respectfully disagree with you. I,

    schools are not corporations…

  • Smith

This is not the right context for this type of sarcasm.  We’re talking about people who have no rights, no contract, and a tough and scary fight ahead of them.
