As others have pointed out, 4 year graduation rates were not focused upon until recently- rightly so since many of our students are ELL- then they were obsessed over. Yet still we raised the graduation rate, the cohort passing the Regents rate, the numbers of students taking the Regents, and all with less time because of all the foolish Brave New World-ish mandatory dumb-ass meetings we were required to attend daily. Still, Bloomie insists on closing us. Basically the DOE put up the goal posts after the game started, and we made goals. Then they moved the goal posts, and we made goals. Finally they kicked everyone out of the stadium, because, after all, we are not supposed to make goals.

You would think that Bloomberg would be rewarding and supporting the achievement of goals, a la his much touted 'incentive pay' system. But obviously, the fix is in, and because little Baby Bloomie didn't to play the ballgame His way, he is taking the ball home.

What a little p---y.

Yes, although I'm not aware of what went on in cabinet, I know that Cornelia Gutwein was here some nights until 10:00 at night, and back in 2002, schools were not given report card grades and weren't graded on their 4 year graduation rate. We all agreed that many students needed more than 4 years to graduate, so Ms. Gutwein shouldn't be blamed. I think our truancy problem needs to be looked at by the administration and stop blaming teachers for poor attendance. If it's a school wide issue, that's an administration problem.

Why should we close down Flushing High School? The DOE is not addressing the problem correctly. Closing down a school that has existed even before THEY (the DOE representatives and Mayor Bloomberg) were born!? I am a student and i can say that FHS has provided me a great education, by far better that Townsend or Stuyvesant. If the DOE will just give us another chance, we can show them how truly amazing we are. They say we are not smart?? I WANNA SEE THEM TELL IT TO MY FACE AND I'LL SLAP MY REPORT CARD WITH A GPA OF 99 TO THEIR FACE! I improved a lot in FHS, the teachers are awesome! So instead of closing this school and wasting your time, try not cutting our budget so we can have a high technology learning. Instead of wasting the government's money on useless "new schools" (which are going to be WORSE then the current school), TRY INVESTING IT TO FHS. I swear that many of us will be successful. Even successful enough to be YOUR BOSS one day....

I must agree with you; as a teacher at FHS I think it's time for everyone from the teachers, students, administration, straight to the DOE to stop pointing fingers and blaming others and instead start to think about how we can once again find success in education.

Flushing high school had a 39% 4 year graduation rate when Mayor Bloomberg took over the school system. Last year, Flushing high school's 4 year graduation rate was over 60%. That is more than a 50% increase in the 4 year graduation rate since the mayor took control. You would think Mayor Bloomberg would want to present Flushing high school as a success story? That is a pretty impressive increase for a large, comprehensive high school which enrolls as many high needs students as Flushing does.

Thank you so much for the comprehensive coverage of our hearing at Flushing HS. Last night's Twitter feed accurately depicted the amazing testimony of our great students.

However, I must address the comments made about the former principal, Cornelia Gutwein. I worked under her for 7 years while she was he principal of Flushing, and along side her last year as we were in transition. Every conversation I have ever had with her always started and ended with the well-being of our students. Ms. Gutwein truly cared about her students and was very understanding of the challenges thy faced in and out of the classroom. To say that she didn't care about graduation rates is slander.
