This is beautiful! Economists can't measure teaching how to be a good friend, or being brave. We need to let our union know that we will not stand be seen as numbers and not humans. We need to stop them from allowing us to be rated only based on the value added test scores. Fight with us by signing this petition and passing it along!

Everything you wrote really resonated with me, the parent of a 5th grader. My children are lucky enough to attend an elementary school that doesn't pigeonhole them by assigning letter or number grades, so it was something of a shock when we went on middle school tours this fall and heard other children talking about their 98s or 3s or 4s or whatever. I want my children to think of school as valuable because they LEARN things there, not because it's a place for weeding out the underperformers or doling out gold stars. I'd add that the rash of specialized middle schools is also ludicrous. Why should a 10 y.o. have to choose between Math & Science and Arts & Letters (to give the names of just 2 which we encountered on our search)?
