Nearly a decade of closures and closure plans, all mapped out

The 23 schools that the Panel for Educational Policy could vote to close or shrink tonight would join more than 100 other schools shuttered in the last decade.

We put together a map that shows the 113 schools that have been partially or completely phased out under the Bloomberg administration alongside the 23 schools that could join them tonight. We also included the 33 schools that the city has said it would require to undergo “turnaround,” a process that entails closing a school and reopening it immediately after changing its name and at least 50 percent of its teachers.

New schools have opened in the buildings where schools have closed, and evidence suggests that the high schools in particular are better than those they replaced. But the Bloomberg administration has also proposed closing 11 schools this year that replaced schools it closed in the past.

The map is interactive so be sure to click around to explore.

The data would seem to suggest that there is something in common in the high closure areas…..I just can’t put my finger on it.

  • Mule Parent

THERE’S ONLY ONE GROUP TO REALLY BLAME – AND THAT’S THE PARENTS.  THE UNEDUCATED, “OUT TO LUNCH” PARENTS WHO ALLOW THE STEAMROLLING TO POUND THROUGH THE CITY.  NEVER, EVER, EVER WOULD THIS HAPPEN ANYWHERE 10 MINUTES EAST, WEST, NORTH, OR SOUTH OF N.Y.C.  THIS CAN ONLY HAPPEN IN A CITY WHERE PARENTS ARE VIEWED AS MULES.  IF YOU ARE A PARENT READING THIS, YOU ARE A MULE!  PERIOD!  WATCH TONIGHT AS THE MULES GET PASSED OVER BY A PANEL THAT LIVES OUTSIDE N.Y.C. AND SENDS THEIR KIDS TO NON-PUBLIC SCHOOLS.  GOTHAM SHOULD DO A STORY ABOUT HOW MANY OF THE ELITE 8 P.E.P. MEMBERS SEND THEIR KIDS TO PUBLIC SCHOOLS HERE IN THE CITY.  WHAT’S THE DATA ON THAT???

  • Observer.

So with a decade of closures we should be able to show a great improvement in the overall achievement scores for NYC. If not the “DATA” shows this is not the way solve the problem.

Wow the upper east side must have some AMAZING teachers. Is the DOE studying those schools to see how they can be replicated?

  • Michael M. (parent still)

What a ridiculous insult to the parents, many of whom are activists, reading this blog.

    I say mule poop.
