Parents from schools that could close give the DOE an F grade

Parents from schools the city has deemed failing issued their own grade to the Department of Education today: an F.

About three dozen parents from schools the department might close gathered on the steps of Tweed Courthouse to decry the department’s policy of shuttering schools instead of offering them additional aid. They said the department has failed at everything from providing resources to struggling schools to engaging parents — even to showing compassion to schools and families working under difficult conditions to help children.

As protesters chanted “Come get your F,” two members of the Chancellor’s Strategic Response Group emerged from Tweed’s front doors to accept the large red F mounted on posterboard and offer a receipt bearing Chancellor Dennis Walcott’s signature.

The protesters came from several schools where organizers with the Coalition for Educational Justice have been assisting parents in pushing back against potential closure. Rallies have taken place at about a dozen schools, often in conjunction with “early engagement” meetings that the department holds to discuss why the schools are struggling and how they might be helped.

Over the last two months, DOE officials have met with community members at 47 schools that met the city’s criteria for closure. Within weeks, the department will whittle down the list and announce which schools it will try to close.

Last year, the department held “early engagement” meetings at 55 schools and ultimately moved to close 25 of them.

The DOE official in charge of school closures, Deputy Chancellor Marc Sternberg, said in a statement that the department would take the parents’ points into account when deciding which schools to close. But he said closure might well be the course the department selects for at least some of the schools.

“For the last two months, we’ve held discussions with members of 47 school communities to understand why these schools continue to struggle year after year,” he said in the statement. “We’ve listened to community feedback on every campus, and will consider it in our final proposals next month. Ultimately, a new school environment may be the best option for some communities.”

  • WHERE R THE PARENTS?

SERIOUSLY …. WTF IS GOING ON HERE?  THE DOE HAS REALLY KILLED THE NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS AND ARE NOW CLOSING SCHOOLS THAT THEY JUST OPENED A FEW YEARS AGO.  THIS IS INSANE!  THERE IS SOOOO MUCH WASTE GOING TO NONSENSE AND PEOPLE WITH 6 FIGURE JOBS THAT ARE JUST NOT NEEDED.  GIVE THE $$$ TO THE STUDENTS AND PROVIDE REAL PROGRAMS AT NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS!
WHAT’S THE ANSWER?  HIRE MORE CONSULTANTS AT $800 A DAY FROM OTHER STATES FLYING IN.  HIRE MORE NETWORK PERSONEL, THAT’S EFFECTIVE!  GET THIS GUY BLOOMBERG AND SOCK PUPPET WALCOTT OUT!!!  THE PARENTS SHOULD FINALLY FIGURE OUT THAT  THE DOE DOESN’T GIVE A ______________ ABOUT THEM OR THEIR CHILDREN!  IT’S ALL ABOUT PAYING FRIENDS 6 FIGURES.  YOU NEED A PRINCIPAL AND TEACHERS, THAT’S IT!  DUMP EVERYONE ELSE AND GET A CLUE!  BY THE WAY, DO WE REALLY NEED 8 PRINCIPALS IN A BUILDING?  THAT’S OVER 1 MILLION RIGHT THERE!

I would like to buy Mr, Sternberg a first class ticket on the Titanic – what a disgusting excuse for an educator and a man – oh wait he is not an educator – he is in charge of the office to close schools – what an embarrassment – wonder how many other cities have a whole office with a Deputy Chancellor in charge of closing schools making way over 100K??  If I were him I would crawl back into the hole that I came out of – I wonder what qualifications you need to have to close schools – the only thing that should be closing is the department of closing schools – let Sternberg know what it feels like – what a jerk!

I don’t disagree with the comments here, but you have to really marvel at the “What, me worry?” stand taken by the DOE. I mean, they close schools, saying they failed, replace them with new ones. which they say failed, and they never, ever admit to having done anything wrong.

It takes chutzpah to a whole new dimension.

  • I noticed that…

It truly tells everyone that the DoE has the biggest cajones with the chutzpah.

  • 55 I’m Out

How soon will there be as many administrators as there are teachers?  The goal of the DOE is to suck all the $$$ for education and give it to:
    Administrators
    Network Leaders
    Instructional Facilitators
    Instructional Coaches
    Senior Facilitators
    Senior Coaches
    Cluster Leaders
    Consultants
    Senior Consultants
    and much more.

The unfortunate truth is if you take the above list and fire everyone with these titles, nothing would happen BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY, YOU NEED A TEACHER IN A CLASSROOM!!!!!!!!

Schools on the closing list serve the most low income students, the most homeless kids, the most kids in special education and the most English Language Learners.
    *****lunch forms*****

Half a million in budget cuts in over 3 years for elementary, and 1 million for H.S.
When they take this money away, where does it exactly go? I would hope to maybe the even less fortunate of NYC. Cause if children in the struggling communities that are stricken with poverty and crime are not deserving of a proper and supportive education, the ones that are attaining a decent education is going to have to pull some heavy weight for their generation in the future. Within these school communities the youth are plagued with violence, school should be a harvest for them. With the proper leadership and guidance from qualified, sincerely devoted overseers, that can recognize their story and ensure a promising future in the most imperative years of their lives. By closing schools your are not giving the youth any hope. Displacing thousands of kids to areas outside their neighborhood to over populate another school, (that may eventually even end up closing cause I am sure their are more buget cuts on the way.) would only create more obstacles in the school system. DON’T CLOSE IT, FIX IT TILL YOU GET IT RIGHT!

Its simple, enlighten the parents, teach them their parental rights. Inform them of each and every board to become informed of the school and DOE policy. Let them know that they have the right to be apart of their children’s educational future.

Show me the money! Where is the accountability? This is not an overnight problem,
getting to the root of it is the only option to correct the statics/data/#’s

Stop closing schools, that is not the answer. The youth today do not want to fill the jails that are being built, they want to rise above the strikes against them.

And when you have 26-29 students in a classroom you need 2 teachers in there!!!!

Healthcare and pensions for retirees.  Bus contracts.  These are the big expense items, and the fastest growing ones, too.

When are ypu ever going to say something that means something. Sure there are people who take advantage. I’m sure there are lawyers who take money and run. Why don’t you say something about that. I’ll tell you why because you have a hidden agenda being here.
Your mouth just keeps on running and I know you want a small footprint. Leave hard working people alone and talk about a subject that you know something about.

  • Real Leader

55 I’m Out – You talk big but I imagine if you were asked to lead a team of teachers towards school improvement you would spend the majority of the time complaining and moaning about how “We don’t have enough resources..” or “My work day is 6.5 hours and that’s all I put in.” What do you know about leadership and vision? It’s the resistant complainers like you that keep our schools from moving forward. If you think you can do better, which I highly doubt, become an administrator or better yet – a teacher leader – and do some real work.

While  a school  needs  competent  administrators. “55 I’m out ” is  absolutely  correct.  Most  of  the people  on  his list  do  NOTHING  but   collect  paychecks,  and  benefits.  They  don’t  spend  a  minute  of  the  day,  educating  a  child.  More  often  than  not,  they  interfere  with  the  people  that  do  teach.

  • 55 I’m Out

Your post was elementary.  You also wrote, “If you think you can do better, become an administrator ……”  are you serious?  I became an EDUCATOR, not an administrator.  I love working with students and interacting and making a difference.  I don’t need to hide behind a desk and pretend to evaluate teachers who are probably smarter than most administrators, like yourself.  Don’t be upset that you have limited time in your “non needed” position.  You have made enough connections so when the time comes and Mr. Cuomo says enough is enough, use the money for things like …. ummmm, teachers and kids, you will be set up somewhere else with some other type of fake position.  It’s administrators that are not needed.  It’s all these fake positions that never existed EVER BEFORE but somehow were created now.  Again, read clearly —– At the end of the day, you physically and logistically need a TEACHER in a room.  You do not need anyone else, period!  My role is defined, your role is not.  It will come out soon enough.

  • Real Leader

55 I’m Out I get the sense that you are a very bitter and sad individual. My guess is you did not get enough pats on the back by the administrators at your school. They probably tried to support you but you were too busy complaining about politics and low pay, while your students stood there trying to figure out what in the hell you were talking about. I wish you well in your next career as a Greeter at Walmart.

  • 55 I’m Out

That was funny but I want to do something more pathetic than greeting people at WalMart.  I’d like to work with you at the network.  We can scam schools into thinking we have all the answers and charge the going rate, 30K per.
