After investigation, Henry Rubio leaves high school for union job

The principal of a high school under scrutiny for cheating has resigned — but not because investigators concluded he did anything wrong.

Henry Rubio, principal of Manhattan’s A. Philip Randolph High School informed staff members this afternoon that he was stepping down. He is taking a job with the principals union, the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators, where he is already a vice president.

An investigation into Rubio concluded on Thursday and found no evidence of wrongdoing on his part, according to Chiara Coletti, a CSA spokeswoman. She said the union had waited until Rubio was cleared of suspicions before giving him the job, as a member of the union’s “supervisory support panel” that helps the Department of Education mentor principals. A prerequisite for that job, Coletti said, is that candidates must be “standing principals,” and the investigation had put Rubio’s status temporarily in jeopardy.

We reported in August that the city’s Office of Special Investigations had opened an inquiry into the school after receiving reports that students had been given passing grades that they had not earned. Teachers and administrators told us that students had been allowed to complete credit recovery work under illicit circumstances and, in some cases, cheated on the work itself.

Talk about incompetents being promoted… At least he won’t be directly responsible for the education of students any more.  A master of CYA and smooth-talking.

My apologies for seeming bitter, but never have I seen one person damage a school community more than he did.

  • AP Dick Casares

Mr. Rubio is my friend.  He appointed me to my position as Assistant Principal here at AP Randalph HS.  I was given the job because of my talent, and not just because we coome from the same island, are both gay, ald like to be the pushy arrogant bosses of people much smarter than us.  Its true that i show groups of boys pictures of naked men, but i still got a jhob.

  • Abc123

Not to mention that he supports teachers who have been accused over and over again of physically bullying students.  (You know who you are…)

I wonder why you are an excoworker. Which one are you? Did you help students cheat on a Regent? Did you make false allegations, that were unsubstantiated, over and over again? Or was is corporal punishment? Did you verbally abuse and discriminate against children? Maybe you are incompetent?  Or maybe you are simply a racist that is having a really tough time digesting it all? People like you give us teachers in this school a bad name.

Whoever you are, I am delighted that people of your “caliber” are not the ones making the significant changes for the success and future of our children. If you needed to vent, you picked the best forum!

No, you do not sound bitter at all. I would define your tone as, typical.

Good luck, and much continued success for Mr. Rubio. I hope that he continues to clear up the path for competent and passionate educators! If you had the slightest idea, Mr. Rubio will do great things for many people. I can attest to that because I am still part of this community.

  • Marlon Jefferson

I am a former student of A. Phillip Randolph and I am very happy to hear that he is gone. Its time to put our once great school back in the limelight for the right reasons….readying our children for college and the future of our country!

  • A positive person

He’s an intelligent and talented young man. Good for him! He’s on a great path!

  • I agree!

He is a wonderful leader. He has integrity and honor. We are happy that everyone now knows that!

  • Honest and concerned

Despite all of the amazing work the principal did to improve the school, until Stena’s actions don’t catch up to her, it’s not going to happen. What poison she is!

  • Danrob

What are you talking about? Limelight? Under his administration the graduation rate went from 62% to and 87%! Do your research pal!

  • Jacksonm82

So true! But not even the world’s greatest exterminator can get every single last insect! Lol!

  • truth

the graduation rate was raised by pushing student through by getting credit through computer classes and asking teachers to change grades. He was a terrible leader, was a liar and only looking out for himself.

  • Danton

Computer classes are offered in HS, colleges and universities all throughout the world. If we were all effective teachers, computer programs would not be doing our jobs. Bottom line is that teacher in the classroom has to be actively proctoring. Rubio always did everything by the book, it’s called integrity, look it up. And yes, he had to look after himself, especially when working with ppl that were evil and did not give a crap about the students. Or did you miss how these same ppl backstab Collins?

  • You’re right…but

Yes, students everywhere are just being pushed through, if they aren’t then the school closes down. So what do we do? Fail the students and look for another job because our school might close? Or push them through to save our jobs? It is nit the admin’s fault. They are getting pressure from above.

Good luck, and much continued success for Mr. Rubio. I hope that he continues to clear up the path for influential and passionate educators!

  • To excoworker

How can you give an opinion of a community you are no longer part of?

  • Jjohnson

That schools will be royally fucked without Rubio! Lol!

  • She’s unbelievable.

Again Stena demonstrates the scum that she is!

  • Education1224

Probably because he knows exactly what went on in that community, which he was once part of

  • Education1224

looks like this is Mrs Rubio defending her husband. your time will soon come, you are both going down

  • Liars

If he had integrity and honor, he wouldn’t do what he has been doing all these years. so sad. he has a history, just look up his open cases in family court. how can one live a life of lies and dishonor?

  • Mrs Rubio

Another post from his wife Mrs Rubio…

  • Former Student

Is a principal not the face and the leader of a school? If that’s true then wouldn’t it be the administrator’s responsibility to fight the pressure from above. Better yet, they can look for the cause of the students almost failing instead of treating the symptoms by pushing them along. Standing by lowering the standards or the credit recovery system is simply abdicating one’s responsibility.

I understand that while it’s easy to talk about doing these things, it’s more difficult when you are the one who has to do it. However as a former student of A. Philip Randolph Campus H.S., I believe that it’s not unreasonable to expect our teachers, and administrators to be the ones who advocate on our behalf.

I graduated a year and a half ago, I have visited the school constantly since, and I feel that the school is better as a whole with Rubio gone.

  • Jetboots

The data that you are refering to is not accurate because teachers were pressured to pass students along; when we refused, they changed our grades.  That is how the rate increased, it happed all over the city.

  • Troy

Joyce Stena  is a talented teacher and a woman of integrity. She refused to sit idly by and watch that evil incompetent fool ruin the school. We all know that he was demoted and only has the job that he has because of his connections. He is the last person who should be be advising principals or anybody else for that matter.

  • APRCHS

Yes!!! Whether you were black or Dominican…if you were ineffective and hindering a child’s education, or did someone innappropriate, you had no business in a school. Mr. Rubio did not tolerate nonsense from anyone!!! No even from the Ex-Superintendent Francesca Pena. That is why she is OUT!!!.. Mr. Rubio won’t tolerate any wrongdoing from anybody. That’s why he reported her to SCI.

  • Amy

Henry Rubio will be missed by nobody.  I don’t think that a day will go by that people would remember a single thing that he did besides destroy a school and get African American and even his own people in trouble.

  • Chaos

The school is falling apart .. We need help here..PLEASE!!!!

The school is better than ever, Mr. Fanning the new principal is doing a great job. CUDOS for Mr. Fanning. Finally we have a real leader, not a snitch like henry rubio. I feel sorry for those principals that rubio is going to be working with. SCI will be very busy. Thank you Stena for helping us to get henry rubio the snitch out of our school..

  • Epic Fail

Why not research the outcome of Joyce Stena’s bogus law suit? Is your job not to report the truth?

  • Teacher @ APR

The school was much better precisely because Mr. Rubio improved it dramatically. Come back in a few months and I guarantee you it will be in a very bad situation. I have been there for many years, not as a visitor but an employee.

  • What?

Stena is an embarrassment to us all and by no means does she represent the opinions of the staff. She is a lying, immoral, vindictive human being that has attempted to manipulate students into lying and making false allegations. She has tried to allure many people to conspire with her, fortunately she has failed. A talented woman of integrity? Never in a million years! She does not even know the meaning of those two words. I am very convinced that all of these negative posts were posted by her. I have been in the school for decades and I can’t name a single person that has any respect for this woman. Teachers, staff, students, and parents all can’t stand her. She is a racist and she has proven it over and over again.
