In mayoral chatter, a name surfaces from the education world

Tisch spoke at a GothamSchools panel in August.

Talk is swirling that an unexpected contender from the education world is being drafted to run for mayor of New York City: Merryl Tisch, chancellor of the New York State Board of Regents.

Education, political, government insiders, and Tisch herself say Tisch has been courted by political consultants as a potential candidate to succeed Mayor Bloomberg. The election is still two years out, but so far no clear favorite has emerged from the crowded field of Democratic hopefuls. Even more room is open in the thin slate of independent and Republican candidates. And so far no candidate fits the mold that Bloomberg has established: nonpartisan, well-connected, and wealthy enough to fund a campaign without making many promises.

Some believe the charismatic Tisch, a registered Democrat from the billionaire Tisch family, could emerge as someone to fill that void. More than a half dozen government and education officials, most of whom only spoke anonymously because they didn’t want to speculate, confirmed her name has been surfacing since last year.

“I wouldn’t be surprised so you can’t count her out yet,” said a source.

Longtime New York City political consultant George Artz said he had also heard the chatter but doubted that Tisch would actually run. At this point, he said, a lot of names are being thrown around, including that of Tisch’s own brother-in-law, Jonathan Tisch, Chairman and CEO of Loews Hotels. Still, Artz said, Merryl Tisch had the pedigree to be a solid candidate.

“I wouldn’t be stunned by it,” Artz said. “Merryl’s been around and she obviously has substance, contacts and money – all the ingredients you need to run for political office.”

This week, Tisch acknowledged the speculation, but characterized any notion that she’s actively considering it as “gossip.”

“I am aware that people are talking about it,” Tisch said. “I am not an idiot.”

“Have people mentioned it to me? Yes. Have I considered it? I am so busy with my work right now, it’s ridiculous.”

Tisch, a former teacher who has served on the Board of Regents since 1996, was elected chancellor in 2009, just in time to oversee the procurement and implementation of New York State’s $700 million Race To The Top grant. In her short time as chancellor, she’s earned a reputation as a knowledgeable and hard-working consensus builder who played a key role in negotiations between the teachers unions and education reformers during the grant’s application process.

In 2004, Tisch mulled a run at an open City Council seat, but ultimately decided not to, she said, because she enjoyed her work too much on the Board. Over the years, however, she’s remained active politically, donating more than $50,000 to a variety of candidates, mostly Democratic candidates, according to campaign finance filings.

This time around, Tisch said she isn’t even pondering the prospect of a political run. “I am absolutely, positively not going to run,” she said.

A lifelong Democrat, Tisch said she would “never enter a Democratic primary” and even offered explicit approval for a leading – if tentative – Republican candidate.

“If Ray Kelly gets the nomination on the GOP ticket, I think he would be a great candidate.”

Wealthy enough to ignore the will of the people and subvert the bedrock concept of democracy?  THAT wealthy?

chatter is right …25 months is a long time with many twists and turns in the road ..Quinn, Liu, Di Blasio maybe Barron on the dem side ..the repub side will be driven by the presidential results; a Perry or Romney will drive a conservative repub, the days of the “liberal” repub r long gone …the floating of Merryl Tisch is the powerbrokers scrambling ..throw out a name and listen for the echos ..actually Kelly v Quinn would be fascinating ..the return of Irish politics

This is a city that is heavily committed to what used to be considered “Democratic” principles, but also disgusted with the Democratic machine and the producer of public services interests that control it.

Most people only pay attention to elections for Mayor and President.  In New York, they’ll vote for the Democratic candidate for President every time.  People waited on line for hours here to vote for President Obama.

But they voted for Republican Mayors five times in a row. And Ed Koch ran against the Democratic machine, and was also on the ballot as a Republican the last two times he ran.  Counting him, opponents of the local Democrats and their supporters and insiders have two eight of nine elections.

And so, the search for anyone but one of them goes on.  Ray Kelly?  Chris Ward?  Merryl Tisch?  Even Joel Klein at some point, and that actor guy.  Remember, people aren’t looking to vote for a Republican because they believe in what the Republican party does.

this is nothing but 1% trying to stay in control. (Let’s not forget she is married to one of the wealthiest real estate developers in the world) We must let the rich know that they are no longer in control. She has no shot! Let’s make sure she hears that loud & clear. NO! NO! NO!

Tisch a former teacher – was it a year in a Hebrew pre-K? That’s like saying someone taking a tour of the White House is a former president.

“earned a reputation as a knowledgeable and hard-working consensus builder.” Seriously? It’s easy to build consensus when you have a small gang running the show. Everyone that reports to her was bought and paid for. She doesn’t consult The Regents, the superintendents, the parents and certainly not the professional educators. And I agree with Norm below – the word teacher is claimed by many – both she and King claim to be former teachers. Show me your NYS permanent teacher certification credentials and name the institution in which you earned tenure, and then claim that honorable title of Teacher.

And let’s not forget her stealth Regent’s Research Fund Fellows program, designed to produce “research” to support her proposals to the Regents, that was paid for with a one million dollar contribution from…..Merryl Tisch. That alone is enough reason to campaign against her.

The unions will continue to suffer the merciless budgets by Mayor Bloomberg.  This is 25 months of torture for the working class families.  Principals (some with little or nil teaching experience) will heartlessly demand untenured teachers to produce these insurmountable paperwork that are needed for their waste-of-time-and-paper portfolios that are purportedly needed for granting tenure.  Sadly, these portfolios are not even read by the superintendent and the majority of the untenured teachers get extensions.  Those at Tweed are dragging Dr. Danielson’s Framework in the dirt because there are no educators at Tweed have an inkling or understanding of the Danielson.  Tweed continues to scofflaw the state ed laws and waits for the lawsuit, which is always a lengthy process and they use the time line in their favor, to cease and desist with their behavior.  They break all the agreements made with the UFT.  Yet, the UFT continues to make good faith deals with the Machiavellians at Tweed.  The mayor has 25 months to destroy the tenure process, to change the seniority rules, to fund their pet projects and their exorbitant consultants while starving schools with budget cuts and unnecessary lay offs the lowest income employers, to push schools to give credits away to students like candy through the bogus credit recovery online learning system (yet, students are not college ready:  http://neatoday.org/2011/07/26/study-shows-students-taking-online-courses-more-likely-to-fail/), to push for increase in class size, to spend millions and millions of dollars on programs that don’t work (ARIS, SESIS, Predictive Assessment), and the mayor wants to reach his goals so he can pass the septic scepter to the next highly endorsed, with Bloombuck, mayor (Quinn).

All of this and the next 25 months of oppression, hegemony by a ruthless mayor, could have been avoided if we had endorsed some else for mayor in 2009.  Let’s never forget this; otherwise, the oppression with the next mayor will continue.

I noticed that – WHAT??? Get your head out of your ass.  The Mayor and the City Council saved the schools from any serious pain while urban, suburban and rural schools across the state have laid off thousands of employees from teachers to aids to support staff and maintenance staff.  You honestly haven’t a clue if you think the City has destroyed the schools….you just don’t dislike Mayor Bloomberg.  And what the hell does that have to do with this article anyway?  Regents Chancellor Tisch is very hard working.  She is also really wealthy. Her experience is something any teacher or education professional should love….she’s more than qualified  I love the idea of her running so you Union hacks don’t control the Mayor like you do the Comptroller (Chairman) Liu.  I hope whoever wins doesn’t need a dime of Union PAC money to win.  The UFT endorsement has been so helpful hasn’t it?

Don’t forget that pretty much every other city agency has been getting absolutely crushed while Bloomberg’s sheltered the education budget.  Here’s a view of Bloomberg’s merciless education budgets.

  • Michael M. (parent still)

Excuse me, but each of the last few years, schools have had to withstand budget cuts, often in the face of rising enrollment.  Care to provide a link with that cute little icon?
