After city’s legal win, Bloomberg attacks UFT and NAACP on air

Being able to move forward with plans to close and co-locate schools isn’t enough for Mayor Michael Bloomberg — he said this morning that the UFT and NAACP should feel ashamed for trying to stop the changes.

Bloomberg used his weekly appearance on “The John Gambling Show” to celebrate yesterday’s late-night decision by Judge Paul Feinman to allow the city to move ahead with 22 school closures and 15 charter school co-locations. The UFT and NAACP sued in May to stop the closure and co-locations.

“There are thousands of families whose children have been in limbo because of this lawsuit, and now we can give them a clear direction. This is a big victory for the kids, and I think those that brought the suit should be ashamed of themselves. There’s no other way to phrase it,” Bloomberg said.

UFT officials bristled at the suggestion, saying that the lawsuit — which will now move into a new phase — was meant to address inequities introduced by Bloomberg’s school policies.

“If there is any shame in this matter, it belongs to the mayor and the administration that sat back and made no attempt to help schools and students that were struggling, an administration that favored charter schools while it ignored the needs of public school students,” UFT President Michael Mulgrew said in a statement.

The radio show’s segment on education began this way:

Gambling: A judge ruling yesterday, against the UFT and the NAACP …

Bloomberg: No, no, I would rephrase that. A judge ruling for the kids.

Gambling: This was on the closing of the 22 really bad schools.

Bloomberg: Close isn’t what we do. It’s retaking these schools, and over a number of years changing the management, the teachers, the programs, in schools that aren’t working. One of these schools, I think they had a three percent proficiency rating in English and nine percent in math. And the suit wanted to keep that school open. This is just so ridiculous.

Later in the show, Bloomberg described the difference between this year and last year, when a UFT-NAACP suit challenging school closure plans was successful. He said,

The law says that you have to go through a process, last time we lost the battle because the law said, Oh, you didn’t do it exactly right, you know, we used it with blue ink rather than black ink or something in the application, it was something, basically trivial stuff like that. This time we took a lot more care, we dotted every I, we crossed every T, they still sued us, and the court said enough.

And Bloomberg on school improvements:

The schools are dramatically better. Someone wrote something the other day, I just wanted to tear my hair out. ‘Oh, all the improvements were illusionary, it was just lying with the numbers.’ No. The state, for whatever reason, the Regents, changed the definition of what they call proficiency. I don’t think we should have proficiency standards, because even Nobel Prize winners go back to school and keep studying. There’s no level where you should say, that’s enough.

And then he got on his private jet and took his gilded behind to his weekend mansion.
When does january 1, 2014 get here?

Bravo Mike Mulgrew you correctly place the shame where it belongs. Mayor Bloomberg, Joel Klein and Dennis Walcott have by design bled many of the schools of necessary resouces while closing neighborhood schools labeling them a failure and forcing students out the door. Their primary goal is to take over existing public school buildings and make them available for charter schools. The mayor is as phony as his threat to layoff thousands of teachers and the self induced budget crisis that coexists with a several billion dollar surplus. Lay the wood to them all Mike Mulgrew.

    Three-term, and three-quote, jerk.

  • http://pissedoffteeacher.blogspot.com Pissedoffteacher

And still no help for the majority of NYC students.  These new schools don’t help but a handful, the handful that would probably be succeeding wherever they went to school.

  • Michael M. (parent still)

As to the third quote, the Mayor is a hypocrite.  Here’s why.

Now he says, “I don’t think we should have proficiency standards.”  But he justified going for his third term as the “education mayor” on the frothy foamy crest of YEARS of inflationary state “proficiency” testing, an error COMPOUNDED by his DOE’s “progress reports”… and all this in the face of flat NAEP scores, which told the true story.

    Shameful and shameless.

And now he wants schools to plan for unprecedented class size increases.  THIRTY in elementary schools.  The connection?  This court judgment he lauds.  The Campaign for Fiscal Equity judgments he spent the bettter part of a decade appealing.  Then ignoring.

    And did I mention hypocritical?

  • Michael M. (parent still)

Do you think he’ll let CB drive him home from the airport?

  • Jeff S

Emperor Michael I has spoken.  You know the man who believes that term limits have no place in New York City despite the fact the public twice voted for them.  And then there was the Emperor and his unqualified lawyer who masqueraded as an educator for 8 years bragging about improved test scores showing greater proficiency and improved graduation rates.  And we’ve seen some of his and Klein’s Principals who made names for themselves by improving graduation rates really did it with phony things such as credit recovery programs and changing legitemate teachers’ grades.

His contempt for the citizens of this city is almost  laughable if it wasn’t so sad.

As long as the mayor takes pleasure in spanking the union the more the union will jab back. Foolishly the mayor is still smarting from his layoff threat debacle, a new school year, an opportunity to rekindle a relationship … at this point historians will praise dramatic drops in crime, environmental measures, bike and hiking paths around the city, and bemoan failed education policies … he has two years …outside of Manhattan and in communities of color he is looked upon w/ deep suspicion … if he spent weekends in East New York instead of Bermuda he might feel the pulse of the city.

  • I noticed that…

BS about the black or blue ink!  For the mayor to say that the prior lawsuits were won on trivial stuff is utter BS!  For the past 8 years the mayor has not abided by the state ed laws; he broke them at every opportunity possible.  We caught him, fought him and taught him a lesson.  But his billionaire attitude won’t accept it the burn.  He will go down in history as the billionaire mayor that couldn’t bring the union, the parents and the community to their knees.  He won one battle and he’s celebrating it in Bermua.  But, the war is still on!

sounds like you have been brainwashed by the retrorgrade anti-child pro-union forces.   How is shuttering failing schools and replacing them with new management a bad things.  Teachers are great but the Teachers UNION is a force of evil and greed that only tries to line the pockets of its members and will throw countelless children under the school bus.

Jeff S, I don’t think you’re being completely fair.  The mayor does believe in term limits. In fact, they’re going back into place right after he leaves office in 2014.  It’s almost here!   Let’s not be fooled and vote for his tool Christine Quinn.

  • Jeff S

The only one throwing school kids under the school bus is the Emperor.  Look at his choices for Superintendent  of Schools; an unqualified lawyer who spent 8 years demonstrating how littler he knows and is now in the process of bringing down News Corp., a magazine publisher who knew even less about education as she never went to a public school in her life and the current incumbent who never spent a day in education either.

Even the state, in its latest approval of the closing of the so called failing schools, finally caught on to their game.  They exclude the very kids who are what cause a school to be considered “failing” and send them off to other schools who suddenly find themselves on all sorts of “failing” schools lists.  It’s hat happened in Brooklyn, as each so called failing school was shut, the new schools did not take the special ed kids, the ESL kids and were allowed to pick their students.  Add that to credit recovery programs, thredats to teachers if they didn’t pass 85% of their kids even if they did no work or didn’t come to class and bravo, you have iproved graduation rates.  Along with that dumb down the Regents exams so a percentage of35.7 is considered passing oo the algeba regents and you have what we have; a school system that has been destroyed.  It’s not the teachers and Principals who are failing the kids.  It’s the Emperor and his clowns of Chancellors he has appointed.

  • I noticed that…

We all know that the mayor has no grasp of reality.  His money has enabled him to construct a distorted, delusional mind.  What’s very sad too is the fact that he has paid off people to accept his erroneous beliefs.  I strongly believe in karma and his day will come.

  • Tiredofyou

Its funny what you said about the Union but all the charter teachers want the union to protect themselves against the New management groups. Then they
get fired for wanting protection. The only people throwing kids under the bus are Bloomberg, Klein, Rhee and the charter operators. Just look who Klein works for if you want to see greed. You need to talk about what you know and not what you don’t know. The Union is made up of teachers and they have their job and never have decisions been made to hurt kids.Kids are hurt by parents who don’t do their jobs so why don’t you address what really is hurting kids. Placing the blame on the wrong people just shows that you have no clue about whats going on. Unions are there to protect their members which protects the kids in the long run.Charter management is a bad thing because they treat education as a business and education and children are the furthest thing from a business. Wake up or it will be too late. You bought into the Bloomberg, Klein Rhee crap which will destroy education In New York and all over the country. Its funny education works but not in the urban areas. What is the variable???

Students in the phase out schools are marginalized and even traumatized as I know from experience. The new schools move into the building with up-to-the-minute equipment, remodeled classrooms and often young and inexperienced administrators and teachers who not realizing this could some day happen to them end up treating the phase out teachers and students as intruders and worse.  During each year of the 4 year phase out more and more teachers leave while the remaining teachers are forced to teach out of license at the determent of the remaining students.   Finally why doesn’t anyone in the press ever hold our cavalier mayor accountable for the “alleged” failure of these schools since he has been running them for over 10 years?  Has he ever even spoken to a student from a “phase out school?”

The corrupt hypocrites here are Weingarten and Mulgrew, who laugh when they put on as big show attacking the mayor and Klein and Walcott. -then invite them to  UFT events and Weingarten’s narcissistic birthday bash.
-the UFT shares spaces with public schools for their charter school.
2-Weingarten and Mulgrew refused to let me write a story about Racqnel James, a black teacher at fordham  HS for the Arts who was railroaded-accused of leaving a death threat in the principal’s mail box two years ago by the principal Iris Blige. When the main accuser turned on Blige and wanted me to write the story clearing James, Weingarten and Mulgrew refused and refused to let me take a vacation day to attend her trial .
Ms. James was fired and two years later, after being indicted for a misdeameanor -think Tucson- still hasnt had a trial The Bronx D.A. -elected with help from the UFT -has asked for 17 postponements. Blige was later fined for telling her A.P’s to recommend Unsatisfactory ratings  BEFORE  teachers were observed.
-the main decision makers at the UFT are almost all white.
-while people like Mulgrew and his tops staff make $200,000 to $300,000 per year, the starting salary for a secretary is $23,000 -constantly abused by Hickey—-they are almost all black and Latina women.
-Weingarten field a phony lawsuit years ago claiming that firing para professionals— black and Latinas- was racist, After she got her headlines, she dropped the case.
-the $50 per day free UFT parking spots given as rewards to UFT insiders are given predominantly to whites. THat is a $500,000 per year- the cost of parking downtown —- perk to Unity Caucus loyalists.

-when a long time UFT Unity Caucus activist- a black woman, complained about shakedowns and fraud in the Staten Island rubber room,. Weingarten and Barr ordered me out of the room- which is a five minute drive from my house. Weingarten had told me to investigate, but a Brooklyn UFT official -who was sending my emails to the DOE- wanted the probe  closed down- the company guards who were working the racket  are employed by a company owned by a billionaire who is a close friend of the mayor. so much for loyatly to a black woman.
-Weingarten and Mulgrew fired or demoted five consecutive black writers, forced out a competent black lawyer, took the Safety Dept away from a black man and replaced Leroy -Barr- a black man -with two whites because Weingarten said he was incompetent. He was allowed to keep his title and salary.
-Mulgrew fired his press secretary- a black man with 19 years experience at the union, with a white guy who quit the union years before right after his five year pension vested.
    anyone see a pattern here?
–On Election Day, 2008, -I was suspended for two days without pay because Weingarten, my editor Deidre McFadyen, staff directors Barr and Ellie Engler, Garry Sprung, CFO David Hickey were off the wall with rage  that I sent a pro-Obama article to UFT staff the week before the election-which writers were always allowed to do.
Weingarten was still bitter about her close pal Hillary losing and wanted to sabotage the Obama campaign.
-when it appeared to UFT staff that there was a predominantly black presence in the rubber rooms, Weingarten and Barr refused to let me do the story.. Neither of these fakers cares one whit about black kids.
    -
any questions? Lots more to come about malfeasance, nepotism, favoritism, incompetence, corruption, no-bid contracts and Mulgrew, Hickey and Weingarten allowing one of their top married  aides to  retire -with a Tier One and UFT pension—after he was caught taking kickbacks in the form of free hotel rooms so he could coerce his subordinate  into having sex with him on union time. She said she was going to the press and was going to file a lawsuit if he stayed.
Jim Callaghan, former UFT staffer fired after 13 years.
    -

  • I noticed that…

Wow, these are amazing incidents that are happening in the UFT.

  • Vote NO!

The  UFT  is  facing  existential  threats  with   the  growing  number  of  non-unionized  charter  schools in  NYC,  as  well  as  a  new  teacher  evaluation  which  will  result  in  thousands  of  unionized  teachers  being  fired  each  year.

  • Minor PS9er

Yup. a victory for the few, a loss for the many. Bloomberg fights for the gamblers and the risk takers. If you lost the lottery, or didn’t play, obviously fate has decreed you a loser not worthy of his help or support.

  • Skibby4

Dear Lord, please give Michael Bloomberg a painful and fatal heart attack after being run over by a speeding bicyclist on his way to eating a transfat-free lunch on the pedestrian mall.

  • flerpo

gee, this guy doesn’t at all sound like a bitter, unhinged, ax-grinder. not at all.

  • CHRIS145

YES AND THANK YOU FOR THE JUDGE THAT GIVE MAYOR BLOOMBERG THE RIGHT TO CLOSE DOWN THESE HORRIBLE SCHOOLS. MAYOR BLOOMBERG WHEN YOU SHUT DOWN PS 147Q IT WAS BECAUSE THEY PASS STUDENTS WHO DON’T DO WORK OR PASS TESTS. ALSO BECAUSE OF LAZY TEACHERS.
