Principal accused of grade-changing could be leaving Lehman

Beleaguered Lehman High School could be getting a new principal, just three years after the city gave Janet Saraceno a $25,000 bonus to take the job, the New York Times is reporting.

As a GothamSchools reporter, Anna Phillips broke the story that Saraceno was accused of padding students’ transcripts with courses they didn’t take and grades they didn’t earn. A city investigation followed. Now that she’s reporting for the New York Times, Phillips is continuing to follow the Lehman story, and today’s update is that Saraceno won’t return to Lehman this fall.

Phillips writes that faculty and staff lobbied against Saraceno in an unsigned letter sent to news organizations last month:

The letter, which was not signed, criticized Dr. Saraceno for being “highly unapproachable” and rarely visiting teachers’ classrooms or observing their lessons.

“Perhaps the most egregious example of Dr. Saraceno’s gross negligence is her advocacy for a weak and poorly executed credit recovery program,” the letter states.

“On several occasions Dr. Saraceno has requested, via her assistant principals, that teachers get on board with grade changes simply because we cannot have students not graduate,” the letter says.

A spokeswoman for the principals union told me that the union could not confirm Saraceno’s departure. “We’ve heard that she might leave, but it’s hearsay,” said the spokeswoman, Chiara Coletti. “She’s a very good principal who was put into a school culture very different from the one she came from, and that can’t be easy.”

One more corrupt Bronx principal bites the dust; how many are there left?

Although this is a sordid, if predictable, result of the data-driven, succeed-at-all-costs culture that is the DOE, I find something positive. The teachers were able to come together and act.  Congratulations to them for alerting the media, and congratulations to Anna Phillips for following up on their lead.

I am hoping the news media continue to delve into the workings of the school system.  We need watchdogs.

  • I noticed that…

Saraceno’s NOT the only principal inflating the graduation rate.  The majority of the high schools are doing this in order for principals to keep their JOBS especially since they are not educators.  As for “advocacy for a weak and poorly executed recovery program”, are you kidding?  Why don’t you do a survey of how many schools have AVENTA or the “Finish this packet and get a credit” program for their seniors?  Do you know how many seniors are right now sitting in an office without supervision finishing up their AVENTA so they can get their diploma because the mayor has instilled so much fear in the hearts of so many principals that preservation, not education, is their goal.  Teacher abuse is the by-product because of all this.  So Anna great job in reporting THIS news but the abuse, the charade, the travesty continues about the real graduation rate and the grade change.

It’s amazing that she wasn’t reported sooner. Sadly the teachers probably hesitate to come forward because they are afraid of reprisal which just continues the cycle. So much blatant propaganda, excuses, and cover up from the bureaucrats and nobody does anything about it. The NY Times article quotes an official saying that Klein appointed her so she was apparently well qualified. Were they referring to the same Klein that appointed Cathy Black? Hmmm I wonder!!

What took 3 years to remove this incompetent principal?  Saraceno was cheating for many years before Lehman but investigators won’t do a full investigation.  Even this year there were report cards and transcripts being changed.  She needs to retire.   She is almost 65 years old.   What is she waiting for?

This article made me laugh.  We’re outraged at what Janet Saraceno has done except that this was repeated over and over in most high schools in the city.  All principals inflate grades and the graduation rate.  At my high school in mid-June; 12 kids – count em, 12, had all the credits they needed to graduate.  The other 50 kids made up credits through credit recovery packets.  Kids who had never been to class graduated because they completed these packets.  Some kids were still working on these packets as late as last week so they could graduate.  There’s no room in the school for all the kids who would have had to be retained – that’s one problem and of course these stupid grades that come out at the end of the year are another problem.  I want to know why Bloomberg and Klein are allowed to continue crowing about the success and progress made in NYC.  The mayor continues to tout all the improvements made (does he really believe this?) and Klein is treated like an expert on education.  It’s ludicrous.  We will be digging ourselves out of the hole these two gentlemen have put us in for years.  They have completely destroyed public education in this city and we act like this fact is something that needs to be uncovered by journalists.  Everyone knows it — Bloomberg has completely wrecked the school system and it will take years to repair it.  At one time in NYC many schools worked well (not all, but many) now nothing works or schools that work are the exception.

I am somewhat disappointed that a news agency would run a story based on an unsigned letter and hearsay. This goes for the New York Times as well. What ever happened to confirming your story before you run with it?

FYI, before this Principal arrived Lehman was the ultimate cheating factory!  “Sir Bob Leder” was the master mind behind the corruption at this Bronx high school.

Shame on the Times and on Gotham for running with a story coming from Barbara Depesa AKA Barbara Depression….  The woman is dangerous to herself and to others.  Ask Barbara what her mothers role at the DOE had to do with the demise of Lehman.

P.S.  Teachers and Administrators, it is time to stand up to the DOE and its credit recovery !!!  Every child is entitled to a free education BUT every child is not entitled to a free diploma !!!

I, too, commented about the same problem.  Why aren’t the newspaper doing more investigation about this problem and they only focus on one school.  Here’s my comment:  Saraceno’s NOT the only principal inflating the graduation rate. So Anna great job in reporting THIS news but the abuse, the charade, the travesty continues about the real graduation rate and the grade change

Phillissa, I would recommend that you do an online survey of how many high school principals are STILL using these “weak and poorly executed credit recovery” programs in their schools.  In August 2010 NYSED updated Part 100.5, section 8 so as to redefine and modify the following guidelines:  Making Up Incomplete or Failed Course Credit

Nothing has changed.  Cheating continues.  Grade/graduation Inflation is inevitable as long as Mayor Bloomberg is in office.  Every diploma granted to a student who used AVENTA or handed in a packet (some students made up one term (8- 15 credits) of work by sitting at the computer) has no educational meaning.  It’s for the stats that boast Bloomberg’s ego and his future career.  If our school system had NOT been comprised of mostly minority children, Bloomberg would not have dared to water down the education system.  Our children were nothing but pawns to Bloomberg’s political career and Walcott should finally open his eyes, too.  Or will he react when he sees his grandchild finally used a stat victim?

Why aren’t we finally outraged that students must be pushed out of high school with a diploma when they are nothing else but STAT VICTIMS?

  • Wondering….

Will Saraceno now peddle her wares in yet another unsuspecting DOE “academy” school?

At the high school I worked at in NYC, the principal would do a grand sweep at the end of the year and just graduate everyone.  Kids who never came to class and did no credit revovery–no problem–GRAND SWEEP!  That’s education in NYC with Bloomy!

  • Third Year Teacher

I really don’t understand these articles.  It seems to indicate that she is LIKELY leaving.  If it is not official why is this news worthy?  I am sure there is a chance that many principals who run failing schools might be fired, but until it is official it seems like writing an article on it is just bad reporting…

Janet Saraceno should run for the hills from that school. Most of the staff there NEVER gave her a chance. From the day she walked in the door, a faction of staff members had it out for her. I applaud her for walking through those doors everyday even though she knew she was not wanted by the staff members who could not let go of Mr. Leder. Mrs. Saraceno, if you leave the school, you can in my opinion walk out with your head held high.

No, make no mistake, Janet Saraceno is NOT a good principal. She is without doubt the most narcissistic destructive administrator I had ever worked under in my employment with the DOE. I am certain many will not miss her at all!
