School budget cuts petition reaches 20K names, officials say

As city and union officials remain mired in budget negotiations, parents and education activists gathered at City Hall today with a new tool to battle against school cuts—scrolls of signatures that reached far beyond the steps.

They unrolled seven of the 50-foot-long lists, which they said contained of the names of 20,000 people who have signed a petition against the mayor’s proposed budget. That number included over 16,000 online signatures.

“Unless you’re stupid or ignorant, you understand that 20,000 of your constituents have signed this, and don’t want you to make these cuts. If you ignore that, you shouldn’t be in office,” said Council Member Robert Jackson, chair of the council’s education committee.

During the rally, UFT President Michael Mulgrew accused Mayor Bloomberg of “playing political games” with the city’s children. “We will not sit idly by as you attack our schools and the services we need,” he said.

twenty thousand?  doesn’t matter if you had twenty bazillion signatures, this mayor could care less.

  • Spoony

The problem is that as far as the mayor is concerned those 20k people are not his constituents. He cares nothing about a future election. So there is no need to even do wjat is popular.

His real constituency, the highest earners, overwhelmingly approves of his policies. After all they are the ones who are benefiting.

  • I noticed that…

The mayor has 30 months left in office.  He will do everything in his power to make himself more famous than Don Gotti because it’s a crime what he’s doing to our schools.  So we can protest, rally, sign petitions, have town meetings, and we will finally be set free from his tyranny January 2014, with a new mayor.

  • Dump Bloomberg

MULGREW FOR MAYOR!!!!!!!!!!!!  DO IT MIKE!!!!!!

“we will finally be set free from his tyranny January 2014, with a new mayor”
Sure there will be a new mayor but Bloomberg will control who it is. Remember Bill Thompson who Bloomberg chose to run against him? He’s running again and his candidacy will keep Liu or Diblasio from winning and allow Bloomberg’s chosen successor to win. Remember: we will have 20 years of Giuliani and Bloomberg. Don’t expect the oligarchy to give up the office.  Weiner was a threat. Lots of happy people on that one.
