Top DOE official John White to head New Orleans school district

New Orleans has picked John White, a top official in New York City’s education department, as its next superintendent, the Times-Picayune is reporting.

The report sends another blow to New York City Schools Chancellor Cathie Black, whose leadership team has been hemorrhaging members. But it also signals that cities continue to be eager to hire administrators who cut their teeth under her predecessor, former schools chancellor Joel Klein.

White would replace Paul Vallas, who is leaving the charter-school-rich Recovery School District at the end of the school year. The Times-Picayune reports that the decision could be finalized at a meeting of the state board of education on Friday.

The Recovery School District referred a request for comment to Louisiana’s state board of education, which did not immediately have a statement. White did not return a request for comment.

Currently the city’s deputy chancellor for talent, labor, and innovation, White began his career in education as a teacher with Teach for America, then ran the organization’s Chicago office. In New York, he has risen from an aide inside the office that creates new schools and shuts down failing ones to a leading official overseeing the city’s ambitious Innovation Zone project.

In these roles, he won respect among some who describe him as a leading thinker on how to transform a school district with the so-called “portfolio” approach. The term refers to the policy of offering several different school options to families — and closing down the options that are judged to be beyond repair.

Community members who opposed that approach, meanwhile, resented White. The Manhattan borough president, Scott Stringer, once said White had “the worst job — ever.”

White would be the second of Black’s top deputies to depart this week. Santiago Taveras, the deputy chancellor for community engagement, announced his departure on Monday.

No great loss…he was another Klein appointee who believed that the biggest problems with the schools is the quality of the teachers or the lack thereof and made it very clear his attitude about due process. He won’t be missed.

    New Orleans -

You receive a big FAIL for getting snowed by John White and his hucksterism. I am sure he can cite chapter and verse about “portfolios of charter schools” and “education being today’s civil rights movement,” but John White has done nothing to significantly change the trajectory of NYC’s most vulnerable students.

If John White hasn’t done it in NYC, what makes you think he’ll do it in New Orleans.

Have fun being blown away by amazing Powerpoint presentations.

Never even heard of him. Sounds like a made up name.

As Freddie Mercury would say, “Another One Bites the Dust.” See ya!!!! Poor Laura Rodriguez. That ________ will rot in Tweed as nobody is picking her up. What a team with Cathie Black at the helm. Letterman should do a top 10 on “Things Cathie Black should do as a Chancellor.” This is a disgraceful saga in NYC right now. How PATHETIC!

  • Mustafa

Good riddance, John White’s an arrogant POS. I hope they eat him alive in NOLA!

  • Sick of Bloomberg

Talk about rats jumping from a sinking ship. Black will start hearing crickets soon (if she doesn’t already!). Our sincerest condolences to New orleans. Can we interest you in a Compact Sized Mayor, with some mileage, and a very slightly used Chancellor???

  • michael

And the rats continue to abandon ship. Captain Bloomberg, still at the helm, still thinks everything is fine.

  • I noticed that…

The Tweed Roman Empire is slowly falling. Although it took 320 years for their collapse, I give tweed and Byzantine educraps 320 days. Then we shall hopefully see a complete transformation. Ahh, body made of stone, but feet made of clay.

What anybody sees in these disciples of Joel Klein, a total ignoramus about education, is totally beyond me. He destroyed the NYC school system, he went around the world bragging how he had intrloduced accountability and by doing that had improved the schools when the true statistics show the schools are not one iota better today than when he arrived on the scene. Good riddance to all these clowns.

What is it with these TFA/Broad Academy/Tweedbots?

Are they really all cyborgs with genetically inbred operating systems, or is it all something out of Melville?

Boy are you guys wrong. He may not have always taken positions that you liked but he cared about education, kids and schools every bit as much as you profess to do. This is why the comment section of this site is always entertaining and always irrelevant. It is populated by those who rant, rather then seek to understand. He is bright, extremely hard working and dedicated. A loss regardless of what you think about his positions..

  • Mustafa

You must be his personal friend and you probably have nothing to do with the NYC public education system.

    You’re dismissed.

nothing lilke proving my point, bud. Just keep those thjoughtful comments coming.

@FirpoM, I see anyone who doesn’t agree with you is an ignoramus. You must work at Tweed. As a parent John White offended me. I remember him sitting at the hearings to close Jamaica High School and treating parents with complete contempt and disrespect. Playing with his cell phone while parents worried about the impact of school closure. Yep, he’s a gem. I know – he needed to do that because the rest of us are just so darn stupid. I’m sorry for NOLA. I just came back from there on Monday and the city is looking better than ever. I hope it can withstand the contemptuous Mr. White. We’re lucky to be rid of him.

  • INSIDE OBSERVER NOT AT TWEED!

Kleins impact on students goes to millions. His people are now leading major school systems all over. the rats are not leaving the ship guys, they are leading the movement else where and all over.

  • SickofBloomberg

Yes, like a modern day plague, just more dangerous.

  • Humpty2005

This forum is populated by those who, on a daily basis, must deal with the incopetence and foolishness of the egomaniacs at Tweed.

FirpoM, let me explain why I am so angry with John White and the other “experts” at Tweed. I’d like to know why, I spent over a million dollars to buy an apartment in my Hells Kitchen neighborhood only to be shut out of the best school in the neighborhood, Midtown West. Midtown West is a “choice” school taking kids from all over Manhattan by application. Since when do public school kids have to fill out an application to get into a school? Since the Tweed Revolution. For Midtown West, kids are chosen in a completely nontransparent fashion – basically based on who the principal likes and who is recommended through preschool. So it’s okay for me to buy a home, invest in the neighborhood, and pay taxes, but my kids get the shaft when it comes to the local public school. Kids from all over District 2 get to come to school in my neighborhood and my kid gets to go to a school in the middle of a construction zone for 3 years. Good riddance to John White, Cathie Black, and I can’t wait until we get rid of the mayor too.
