Murry Bergtraum students riot after bathroom access denied

Hundreds of students at Murry Bergtraum High School rioted through the hallways today after the school’s principal told teachers not to give out bathroom passes.

Teachers at the lower Manhattan school said that the day began with a fight between two students on the building’s third floor. After the fight, Bergtraum principal Andrea Lewis reportedly announced over the school’s loud speaker that in the future, students who fought would be arrested. Lewis reportedly told students and staff that for the rest of the day, the school’s bathrooms would be closed and teachers should not issue bathroom passes.

In a school of over 2,600 students, this news did not sit well.

“She also said that in the case of emergency, kids could use the bathrooms in the nurse’s office, but by then, given the nature of adolescents, the message had been delivered that the bathrooms would be shut,” a teacher said.

Within minutes, students were on their cell phones, which they are not allowed to bring into the school. Messages traveled from student to student, saying there would be a riot. During fifth period, hundreds of students began running through the fourth floor hallways at top speed, screaming and shouting. By the beginning of sixth period it had spread to the basement. Teachers said they locked their classrooms to keep their students inside while school safety officers tried to end the riot, which teachers said went on for about 20 minutes.

“They actually filled the halls from one side to the other,” said a teacher. He said one of his students had an asthma attack as she tried to make her way up a staircase while students poured down.

Formerly the principal of Acorn Community High School, Lewis came to Bergtraum this year. As an executive principal, she received a $25,000 yearly bonus for agreeing to lead the struggling school for at least three years. Though Murry Bergtraum has received low grades on its annual progress reports, the city does not have plans to close it.

“This was a principal that was sent to the school to turn the school around, however her record has been one of success in academics,” said teachers union chapter leader John Elfrank-Dana.

“She has failing grades for security from her previous school. That is a concern of the staff,” he said.

After the riot, students went on Twitter to broadcast the news and threaten to riot again tomorrow.

“Bergtraum is gonna get closed down, there was riots in every floor every period,” wrote one student.

“Riotin all day cause the f-n principal is blowin ours and cut off the bathroom use all day,” wrote another.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Education said that one of the two students in the initial fight was sent to the hospital and released, but no other injuries have been reported. She said the incident is under investigation.

This school sucks. But thanks to my last years counselor i got in there. Teachers in there they don’t care about their students. All they care is if they can get over their lessons in enough time. I’ve never seen teachers like that in my life for sure. They see you doing nothing and never go up to ask if you need help or not. I was new to a class, the teacher didn’t plan to help me at all. Fights always happens in this school. Just that the principal makes everything big and worse. No offense but shes just a piece of black shit. She want to change habits that last years in a few months? How is that possible? If she wants respect from students she should respect them first. All I know is that this school gotta be closed down because every year students that enters the school are the ones that never wanted in other schools. And GOOD counselors always whip out kids that have the choices that wants to go to MBHS anyway. She just have to learn how to fix the problem instead of making it worse.

Well the way students expressed the anger was not the best way, but Dr. Lewis handles with stupidity and very unfair. She really needs to calm down, like come on “no bathrooms?” “Suspension for being late to class if you are caught in the hall after the bell?”. She also canceled some of the MBHS senior class of 2011 senior activities like the senior cruise, word from the staff that she going to cancel the senior trip and prom. Like come on this is suppose to be a good memorable year for us before we graduate and get into the real world but with this principle its not going to happen this principle is supposely going to bring this school up but this school is just gotten worst and is gonna get WORST! Because of the additude she has and her stupidity on dealing with things. Wow. Requiring teachers to send home progress reports every three weeks so you don’t get surprises when you get your report card, asking teachers to have lessons plans and prepared tests instead of winging it in class or teaching the same lesson for a whole week, paying for Saturday Regents prep classes for students that haven’t passed their regents so they can graduate on time, asking counselors to meet with their students often so they have what they need and graduate with either a regents or advanced regents diploma, getting three different tutoring providers to assist our students for free, asking students to do more so they can get into better colleges, collecting lunch applications so we can get extra funding, getting over 1400 parents to come to open school night so parents can find out what their children are doing (compare this to the 600 we had last year) and opening bathrooms on the first, third, and fourth as long as we have the staff to manage them. Yes, three bathrooms if everyone assigned comes in. Making sure students don’t take the bathroom pass and walk around the school for 20 minutes disrupting classes where people are trying to teach. Colleges classes with Baruch, Pace University, BMCC and Syracuse University. What an evil monster Dr. Lewis is. Two sides to every story people. Do a little more investigating before you allow these ingrates to color your mind about what is really going on at MBHS. Bergtraum just needs to select our students the way we used to instead of getting as you can see from the postings above a special type of “intellectuals”. We educated thousands of successful wonderful people and we can do it again.

Teach is right in! Thanks. It’s so sad that waiting for superman sends the message that the solution is charter schools when things like this happen. The school has been going downhill for years, let’s not forget the last two D’s we’ve received.

Why does this school large percentage of students come from bed stuy, crown heights, brwonsville, Canarsie, etc? The school has been dumped on for many years by the department if education. The students are from poor ghetto neighborhoods. Many of these kids have parents addicted to drugs or many are being raised by grandparents who are too old to discipline them. The solution to this problem is not the Principal, it’s enrollment/admissions.

The writing is on the war, mbhs is prime real estate for a nice white charter school. All the kids will be sent off to their zoned schools and all of the staff members will have to find jobs elsewhere.

Now I wasn’t there, and I don’t have all of the details, but it seems like the students have a point. The problem with some adults is that they feel that because they have a position of power, they are automatically supposed to be respected, this isn’t true. My years at MBHS were the best yrs of my life, and although we had mean deans, and security guards who didn’t play, they respected us. Going back to MBHS shocked me with all of the changes that were mad, and the sad thing is that ppl only blame the students, and its everyone’s fault. Students deserve, just as the teachers and the principle want respect. The students just have to find a better way to show that they don’t agree with what’s going on, rioting will make things worse on you guys.

–If the bathroom pass has been denied and what the students say is true about the lack of open bathrooms and long lines for the bathroom this was indeed a disaster in the making. How do you have only one bathroom open in a school that has like 8 floors? Then saying in case of emergencies they can use the one in the nurses office. Really?!! 2,600 students who at any given time can have to pee. SMH.

–How does a fight between 2 students shut down an necessity for the other 2,598? What kind of logic is that? How could she as a human think that this was a good idea? 2, 598 students werent involved in the fight. truth be told minus a few on lookers they were all in class why should they be punished for the problem of two.

–On to my feelings about the riot. Could the students had done something peaceful. Yes they could have. Any good educator knows that respect is earned not automatically given. A new principal who is rude and disrespectful to students on a consistent basis got what she put out in the universe. I am sure that there have been some positive changes made by her in the school but why should these changes trump the fact that she has a horrible attitude toward her students. People fail to realize that while they may be young that these teenagers are people too. Why shouldnt they express their anger? Sure they couldve had a petition and did a sit in and other things of that nature but would it had gotten the same kind of response? All of these students were just hanging out and decided to riot. I am pretty sure a lot of them left class. So what does that say about the teachers? Maybe that they were in support of it because they too feel disrespected and are angry. Where was security that is supposed to be patrolling the halls why wasnt it stopped before it got this far? People are angry at the students but there are other factors involved.

–Then to hear that senior students who have worked hard over the past couple years to become seniors are having their activities cut, especially ones deemed as tradition at the school. How is that fair to them. Someone new comes in and without meeting with the senior class and getting to know them they are all deemed bad and or horrible and the events are cut. Once again, little concern for population that you are in charge of.

–You cant call yourself the boss or claiming to do well for your company without knowing your clientele. Now if the student and staff alike are having problems with the boss what does that say about the person in charge.

They tell me how unfair and disrespectful she is, but in all honesty its called killing with kindness. Show her respect even though she is so-called disrespecting you guys. Its the only way she will change. Dont go off and riot and claming “its our right”. She is in charge of the school, she has the power to do what she feels. During the warm months a teacher took students to the beach. A student drowned. Board of education follow up. Fire teacher, demote assistant principal and principal of that school. Result for the rest of us. All events on water were forbidden by chancellor Klein. Dr. Lewis called district office, superintendent, and central office trying to get cruise approved and got turned down. Ms Taylor and brown also tried and got turned down. Everyone wanted the cruise. It is one of our treasured events. Dr. Lewis did not stop the cruise, klien did. Two sides to every story.

AnaaG – I didn’t feel my comment was ignorant and here is why. There is always another option to take, always a BETTER decision that could be made. Are you saying that a normal response to the bathroom’s being closed is to try to tear the school down? Are you honestly trying to make that argument? Yes, going to the bathroom is a natural function, and if a student in one of my classes needed to use the rest room, I would do everything in my power to assist them. That is one of the things I never give them problems with. I just felt the reaction was low brow, and more on the level of what children would do. The majority of them I felt didn’t even care about the bathroom situation and more saw this as an opportunity to act out and be a part of the crowd.

The fact is, many of the teachers do care about the students. The principal has her method of doing things, and that is her method. Maybe it wasn’t the right thing to do, but the students could have chosen a better option. Someone could have been seriously hurt and luckily no one died, because if someone did, the guilt would be on the consciences of many.

So my senior year at bergtraum was amazing and I still have many friends as well as family there who I go to visit. All I’ve heard so far is that as soon as this year started the new principal immediately began taking away senior activities and other privileges. I spent 3 years looking forward to Bergtraum annual senior activities its tradition how dare she take that away from anyone ? And to restrict the bathroom is absolutely insane with that many students in the school, rioting was a dumb idea I would’ve just left but I can honestly understand why the students are upset even when I visit I can see the difference in the school and its sad my old teachers hate her and so do my old classmates. She needs to relax a bit.

yes we know that dr.lewis has been trying to help, but all we ask for is a little respect, its not nice to be spoken to as if your worthless, especially by someone who hardly even knows you. Dr.lewis needs to realise that shes not going to get anywhere unless she changes her attitude, shes been handling this wrong since day one. I think the riot today was forshadowing a big change. I wasnt part of the riot but be honest, if those kids would have “protested” in a “calm and mature way” they would have been ignored like we ALWAYS are. She is here to get her 25K/yr and shut the school down in 3 years. She can retire anytime soon I am told. Model respect! LA and credit recovery is a farce! If you can get credits in one week, why have the day school? Shut it down, save money and have all day schools do credit recovery! Students will graduate in 6 to 12 months at 100% graduation rate. This will make her good!!!
Bottom line today’s incident is the tip of the iceberg! Continue to be arrogant and you will have more of this..metal detectors is not going to change things!

oh and another thing, adults often make the mistake of blaming all kids for the wrong doings of a few kids. Even though mbhs is heading downhill there are still plenty of students like myself(im 16) that are talented, well educated, mature, and actually want to have a good future. Some kids just have to take a different path through life, so dont go talking down about all the kids in mbhs because there are still alot of bright lights in there waiting for their chance to shine but they wont get the chance to if you cant see past the few dull bulbs

Yea, I’m empowering them to “act like hoodrats” because I said they have opinions and feelings too. Its sad how most of you wouldn’t allow anyone to disrespect you, but because these are teens, they are wrong, not all of these kids who participated are “bad”. Being older does not give you a pass to treat kids like they are nothing. Calling them names isn’t gonna solve anything, so say what you want. To the current students at MBHS fight for what you believe in, but find a better way, turn this negative into a positive as @teacher has said, and the teachers who understand you, they will help you.

Wow. To be honest, Im not surprised. I completely agree with the students about the bathroom thing, it was bad when I was there. However, this is not going to solve anything. You complain about being treated like animals, but what you did proved their point. & to the person who said getting arrested and suspended is “fun” and “cool” iim speechless…but again NOT surprised. @staff who said that children’s parents are on drugs…Oo My God…you wonder why they dont respect you…they were wrong about the riot but that was probably just as immature as their actions…for students who’s comments have nothing to do with the subject i.e. Black vs Latinos, this-or-that-house!!…stick to twitter and facebook…positive change comes when correct english is used…ii use different spelling when I text too, but there’s a time & place for everything…my point is, she’s wrong and someone probably would have corrected her, but the riot will cover her mistake and now you all are going to look like barbaric fools…unfortunately

Many teachers at mbhs are good and hard working. Many are at max salary. If mbhs closes, we will all be looking for jobs. Who will hire us? Hmmmmm.

I wonder how many “rioting” students were concerned about the bathrooms and weren’t just looking for an excuse to behave disorderly? They didn’t seem dedicated to anything in particular. I saw lots of students that hall walk and are failing classes in the group.

And grad 2010 I think that the seniors need to petition Chancellor Black. She has the power to reinstate our cruise. Central board cancelled the halloween dance too even though Ms. Taylor and Mr. Simon said they would be the supervisors for the night. And Dr. Lewis placed no restrictions on the event. This behavior would definitely affect upcoming activities: The Holiday assembly, the junior senior dance, the talent show and other fun stuff.

All students Think before you act. You might just win the battle but lose the war. And then there will be no winners.
