A mistake and a typo prompt good humor between two rivals

Though they are at times each others’ harshest critics, Chancellor Joel Klein and noted education historian Diane Ravitch proved last week that they can occasionally share a laugh.

Last week, Klein e-mailed Ravitch asking for the “latest draft op-ed.” The message was an accident — presumably Klein meant to send it to the Department of Education’s press secretary, whose name is quite similar. “That’s what they get for getting a PR person named R-a-v-i-t-z,” Ravitch said when she forwarded us the e-mail.

A humorous exchange followed. Read from the bottom up:

May God be with you

I was afraid for a second that I mistyped “luck”

Whew

    Maura,

Please note that I shared this with Joel Klein’s permission.

It’s especially amusing considering the featherbrain Ravitz’ latest piece of fluffy silliness is probably another attack on Ravitch.

Awesome! Too bad my email address isn’t cathie blach or something similar.

Ravitz is a one trick pony…

    1. Say someone else is wrong because they don’t agree with what the DOE is doing

    And

    2. Say “we’re” not surprised because traditionally “they’ve” resisted every single one of our meaningful reforms.

How much does she get paid for this garbage?

Diane Ravitch is a class act!! The other Diane–not so much, Klein–not at all.

  • Michael M.

    Too funny.

Reminds us all (esp moi) to keep the foc-us (no typos there? good!) on policy and politics — not personal.

Twould have been funny had R-a-v-i-t-c-h penned a “faux” op ed, eh?

Just curious: How long until Klein figured out the error? Did he send R-a-v-i-t-z another email later when he got no reply at 10:32 PM?

I sooo love irony at Tweed. Particularly layered in this case, as Ravitz’s last two essays on Ravitch have been HIT PIECES on Ravitch. I assume with the boss’s blessing, as they were credited to her in her official capacity.

“In an op-ed in Monday’s New York Daily News, Ms. Ravitch argues that factors “outside the school are even more important than the teacher, especially family income,” because rich kids’ parents “take them to the library and museums… give them good medical care and nutrition… travel and… endow them with a large vocabulary before the first day of school.”" (Note the mix of true quote with an amped-up bridge, and “…”‘s. Nice editing.)

    and

“We can argue over the numbers all day, and Ms. Ravitch has a right to her opinion. But it is unfortunate that, as someone who claims to value what happens to our children, she continually chooses to disparage their accomplishments. ” (Not what Ravitch disparages, actually. Nice slight of hand equating criticism of Klein to criticism of kids, while getting in a character shot.)

The common denominator? Ravitch’s challenge to Klein’s blame-the-teachers mantra.

Read this for the antidote, from someone who truly DOES value what happens to children, and I’m not even saying Ravitz doesn’t:

Ravitz is just doing her job — that’s what paid mouthpieces do. She’s doing it poorly, though, because a COMPETENT paid mouthpiece wouldn’t instantly attract ridicule and cause characterizations like “garbage” and “featherbrain” to leap out at observers. You’d think that in NYC there’d be someone available to do that job well.
