Live-blogging Joel Klein’s “sayonara”; hello Cathie Black

We’re live-blogging Mayor Bloomberg’s press conference right now at City Hall, announcing Schools Chancellor Joel Klein’s resignation.

4:11 pm. Bloomberg’s last words to Black, he says, were to the point. “I told her what I tell everyone and that is, don’t screw it up,” he said.

4 pm. Asked what her greatest challenge will be, Black tells the press: ”With the help of the eight deputies in the office, we will spend a good amount of time prepping me and making sure I understand all of the issues thoroughly. The change, the opportunity to make a difference, is really what has compelled me to want this position.”

3:53 pm. The next question is, What about a public search for such a public job? “I did have a public serarch and I picked the best person,” Bloomberg answered, inscrutably. He also said, “In the end, it is the mayor who picks the chancellor.” And he added, “I have looked for people of all backgrounds.”

Also: Who was the first person Black met in this process? Teachers union president Michael Mulgrew, Bloomberg declared.

“Mulgrew has met her,” Mulgrew spokesman Dick Riley just confirmed.

Black’s children went to private boarding school in Connecticut.

3:51 pm. The mayor et. al are now taking questions from the press, starting with, Why not an educator? ”Joel has built an amazing staff of pedagogical experts. That’s not our problem here,” Bloomberg said.

He said the new chancellor’s expertise needed to be dealing with the tough economy. ”Jobs, jobs, jobs. That’s exactly what Cathie Black knows about,” he said.

3:46 pm. Among Black’s first remarks: ”New York has the best teachers in the country.” She is also running through the objectives Bloomberg announced at NBC’s Education Nation event, which did not sound at all different from Klein’s.

“My main goal will be to build on the work of the Bloomberg administration and chancellor klein’s tenure,” she said.

3:45 pm. Klein will remain on until the first of the year to help Black with her transition, Bloomberg said.

3:44 pm Klein to Black: ”I also am comfortable in saying I’m leaving you the best team ever assembled in education.” This seems to indicate that his preference is for the eight deputy chancellors to remain in place after he leaves.

3:40 pm. Klein has accepted an offer form NewsCorp, Rupert Murdoch’s news organization, and will serve as executive vice president and on the board of directors. His main responsibility will be to “put them in the burgeoning and dynamic education marketplace. I do believe, as I said, that that is the future.”

“Cathie, let me congratulate you and thank you for taking on this important assignment,” Klein added, looking to Black, who is wearing black. Just saying.

“I also am comfortable in saying I’m leaving you the best team ever assembled in education,” Klein said to Black. This seems to indicate that his preference is for the eight deputy chancellors to remain in place after he leaves.

3:39 pm. Making his remarks, Klein hasn’t yet mentioned his next plans, although he did say, “To me education will always be at the core of my life’s work.”

3:38 pm. Black is the first woman to lead New York City’s school system, the largest in the country, our resident education historian Philissa Cramer just confirmed from Israel.

3:34 pm. Cathleen Black, who was president at the magazine publishing company Hearst, is the next chancellor of the New York City school systems. “I know the first thing she’ll want to do is reach out toparents, teachers, princpal and and adminsistartors to get the benefit of their wisdom,” Bloomberg said of her. He also said, “She is also someone who has had a long active, e ffort in civic affairs,” including work in youth literacy.

Chancellor Joel Klein exits as schools chancellor. He will move to News Corp, the news organization owned by Rupert Murdoch, where he will expand the company's education business.

3:30 pm. In doling out credit, Bloomberg just named several top officials at the Department of Education — but mangled Chief Schools Officer Eric Nadelstern’s name. He also named Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott and Chief Operating Officer Sharon Greenberger, who is a recent appointee. Sources told me Greenberg was placed at the suggestion of the mayor.

From MSN.com: “Black also promised to bring 100 new charter schools to New York City.” I wonder which schools are on her to close list to make room for them. She has no intention of fixing NYC public schools.

  • Jeff S

queens parent…I never thought I would hear something like that from you! You’ve finally seen the light of just what Klein was up to. Congrats.

  • Jeff S

The pressure just has to be brought on Steiner to deny the waiver. If he is a true educator and a believer in public education and the kids, he will do so. If on the other hand he approves the waiver, we will see just where he stands.

  • did you notice…

Can a Mayor be impeached? Can we call for impeachment?

  • Invictus

Those 100 charters that she is attempting to bring to NYC will basically drive out the remnants of public school first in Manhattan and then from other desirable boroughs to extinction.  In the future I see even those small public schools being thrown under the truck, to pave way to charter schools.  It is a very clear possibility.

I signed Justin’s petition (glad he took the time to set it up!) and I encourage others to do so as well, and spread the word. If there is enough of an outcry maybe they will find someone truly qualified (and I don’t mean Michelle Rhee)

Since our new chancellor made her mark in fashion magazines, can we look forward to school uniforms designed by Dior and Calvin Klein, along with staff development workshops chock full of fashion tips? Because I could use some “Dress for Success” tips as I spend my 2nd year in the ATR pool.

Can someone post David Steiner’s e-mail address?

This is all about Bloombucks setting himself up for a presidential run in 2012. He knew Klein was making him look bad. He had to get rid of him to try and gain some credibility back on education.

Funny that she talks about the innovation technology can bring, yet many of the schools in the endangered list lack much updated technology and Tweed has refused to grant it money to rewire and get more up to date computers.  CB will be tougher than DeKlein, the union has a major fight on its hands.  Worser than a lawyer is a former publishing field corporate type.

Regardless of what is mentioned here about her ED qualifications, Bloom would not have dared to make such a media circus unless he was ensured that she would get the waver.

  • Invictus

“Some credibility back to education” that is an excellent quote to use.  Credibility via a lack of ED qualifications.

Next:  anyone suit/body will be “granted a waver” to teach, regardless of past experiences or criminal record.

Joel is the biggest hypocrite of all time. He spent his entire “educational” career stating that we need to “put the children first”. Now he punks out and quits before he is supposed to leave office. He gets no respect at all from me. Now we have yet another person in charge of the DOE has no experience at all with working in a public school setting. I think some of the above posts are correct. Something big is going down. It is either some terrible news from the DOE screwing up or they are about to blast the first cannon to start a war with the UFT. (Or it could be both) Can’t wait to see how the newspapers spin this news on Wednesday.

The following two paragraphs were taking from The WSJ website.

“In his new role as executive vice president, Mr. Klein will advise News Corp. on opportunities to invest in digital initiatives in the education market, a person familiar with the matter said.

Education is an area of interest for News Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch, who believes the sector is “ripe for innovation,” the person said. News Corp.’s efforts will focus on providing seed money to start-ups working on new technologies in the education arena. News Corp. is also the parent company of The Wall Street Journal.”

    Draw your own conclusions.
Klein’s Motto was “Children come First”. Yeah right!!

    …..”Were taken”… Sorry .
This is what happens when you are mad!

Lawrence Littlefield is the only one who wrote a sensible comment on this thread.

A lack of qualifications is the new Black.
    Prior black too.

As to Mr. Klein’s new gig with NewsCorp… he’s an ideologue who has spent nine years fudging facts to suit political ends. He’ll fit right in.

Totally out of context, but she DID say it: ”I Think We’ve All Stopped Lying to Each Other.”

    Irony lives on at Tweed.

Two words that don’t belong together: Boarding. School.

P.S. I don’t think I’ve ever felt like hugging QP before.

“The Chancellor Wears No Clothes!” by Cathie Black

  • http://www.huffingtonpost.com/patricia-connelly/ Patricia Connelly

I had been expecting Klein’s resignation for months now. Just call it a clued-in mom’s intuition. But I thought that Eric Nadelstern would get the nod… Yet, it boggles my mind still… Another corporate toadie for NYC Chancellor with absolutely no personal or professional experience in public education?! I guess that Bloomberg & his mewing oligarchy think the rest of us vast unwashed haven’t had enough of the abundantly discredited model of “corporate” management of essential public services? Let’s prove them wrong — SOON!

  • J. Land

“This is absurd! No experience in education, kids went to private school”

Not private school, BOARDING SCHOOL!!!   It’s where you send your kids when you don’t want them around.   She could have sent them to a tony school in NYC but she SHIPPED THEM AWAY!!!!

I have no doubt that people successful in the private sector can make excellent public officials, even without decades of experience in the specific field.   But clearly on a scale of 1 to 100 Black’s suitability for Chancellor of NYC Public Schools is a minus 100.
