City parents call NBC’s education week programs biased

picture-15

A group of city public school parents blasted NBC today for its week-long special programming on education, saying that the network has kept parents and skeptics of education reform off the air.

The network is running a series of televised interviews and panel discussions it is calling “Education Nation” all this week. Parents gathered today outside of the “Learning Plaza” the network has built at Rockefeller Center to complain about the series’ line-up of speakers, which is dominated by politicians, officials and philanthropists.

“Parents are offended about the way in which NBC has refused to invite a single NYC public school parent onto any of their panels,” said Leonie Haimson, executive director of Class Size Matters. “Instead, the network has allowed wealthy billionaires once again to control the agenda.”

The group also criticized NBC for allowing Mayor Bloomberg to deliver a policy speech televised on the network Monday morning without taking questions from reporters.

Go Leonie!  We’d be lost without you.  How many people actually watched their Education program on Sunday?  I know I didn’t tune in because I’d heard it all before.

God bless Leonie. We need to clone her.

    Learning Plaza, Gracie?

    Go Leonie, Go!!!!!

  • An Effective Teacher Says…

I had been feeling very demoralized this week until reading this. I didn’t know of this organization before, and it is incredibly wonderful to know that someone actually cares about class size and is willing to take a stand for what matters most…. of course, it’d also be nice if the UFT would do something. I’d rather send my UFT dues to Leonie’s organization than see it evaporate in the U-Forget-Teachers organization so they can purchase new furniture and artwork at their pristine HQ.

  • I noticed that…

To Leonie, Diane Ravitch, Patrick Sullivan, Lisa Donlan, Jane R. Hirschmann, and many, many more parent advocates who are out there fighting along with the teachers the biased, injustices by the media, you are the best!

Teachers cannot do it along; we thank you immensely.

Now if the MSM would cover this. It’s an important message.

Thanks for providing the update on this protest, Leonie. I’m glad some of you went out there!
I also appreciate your participation in tonight’s Roundtable. I will share your ideas with others.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. NBC should be ashamed of itself for producing the most one sided spin for policy makers. No parents on their panels! No teachers on their panels, and saddest of all no students on their panels. It was one big Arne Duncan and Michelle Rehee love fest. My God no one question Mayor Bloomberg’s 15 minute rant. His very fuzzy data that was exposed last month went unquestioned.
Children are more than test scores!

One of the NY teachers on stage with Brian Williams at Sunday’s EN Teacher Town Hall wrote a great piece about his experience called “Education Nation: I Should Have Known Better” http://stephenlazar.com/blog/2010/09/education-nation-i-should-have-known-better/

thanks for all the supportive comments above. The point about Bloomberg is that he was allowed to make a 15 min speech on national tv, w/out a single reporter allowed to ask questions, in which he claimed great progress while meanwhile downtown, members of the public and the Council were lambasting his record and pointing out that his claims were based on fraudulent and inflated state test scores. And these guys running the show want to foist this same system on the rest of the country! No one gets this sort of media access except perhaps the president. this points out how the entire extravaganza that should have been called Education Indoctrination was an infomercial, brought to you by the Billionaire boys club of Gates, Broad and Bloomberg.
