Re: report on younger teachers and their preference for differentiated pay.

Why should anyone even consider the thoughts of Gen. Y teachers?  As teachers, we know that younger people tend to be idealistic and unrealistic about their long term financial security.  They really do think they can change the world and that somehow their good karma will take care of them when they’re ready to retire.

I want to hear the opinions of teachers that have life experience, a mortgage, and a even a few kids.  They have actual responsibilities and can’t go running to daddy every time they’re late on their rent.

“Almost 7 in 10 younger teachers plan to stay in the classroom for more than a decade”. Great, so that means that 3 plan not to stay in the classroom less than a decade. In other words, 30 out of 100 younger teachers plan on getting out of the profession rather quickly. There are many large schools with a hundred teachers on staff. Just imagine if 30 left every year. I have nothing against new teachers who chose teaching as a life-long profession. All veteran teachers started out rather young and wet behind the ears. However, in the 16 years that I have been teaching, I have seen the majority of Teach For America and Teaching Fellows in my school leave after the mandatory 3 years to get a “real job”. Many of these teachers in fact have told me that they plan on becoming lawyers or doctors after their 3 years are up. If you want to be a career teacher and find that it is not to you liking and quit, I have no problem with that. But to sign on for 3 years knowing that you are going to leave the profession simply makes teaching look worthless. Lastly, teacher turnover causes major headaches for students, administrators, and the current staff at schools. However, in the Boomklein era, who really cares about that?

In the world of BloomKlein, 30% of teachers using the revolving door is good news. This means they never get fully vested in the pension system, most likely will never need family level health insurance, and will keep salaries low by not staying long enough to get to the top pay levels. In turn, they can be counted on to vote easily for the short-term benefit, like bonuses and raises, while being totally willing to give away things like job security (read: vote to dump ATRs), changes in pension rights/benefits (read: change to 401k), and lifetime health benefits after retirement. As BloomKlein push out the veteran, career teachers and replace them with what amounts to long-term temps, watch the job security, pensions, etc. be voted out in exchange for simple raises as these temps become a larger share of the voting bloc.
