Though it's too late for my son to benefit, I for one am glad to see a greater focus on expository writing and a move away from the hated (by my child) "personal narrative," and let's not forget the even-more-hated "small moments." God, the years of misery in elementary school. I am sure some children liked and did well with this teaching method which I associate with the Teachers College Writers Workshop teaching method, but for many others is was frustrating and nonsensical.
DOE provided summer/fall per session $ for teachers to incorporate standards into lesson plans & utilize plans in the fall; hopefully the DOE will a site for all staff to access. Math appears to be impacted the most ... will new common core standards impact teaching & learning?

Can what we teach and how we teach it overcome the pathologies of poverty?
