Chicago’s aggressive new union leader introduces herself

State of the CTU Address-Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis from Kenzo Shibata on Vimeo.

If anyone wondered what the union backlash to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan’s leadership would be like, watch this state of the union address by Chicago’s newly elected teachers union president.

Former high school chemistry teacher Karen Lewis pulled no punches in an address she gave on July 1, in which she laid out her plans for an adversarial relationship with Chicago school CEO Ron Huberman. After slamming the city’s school board for planned budget cuts and layoffs, Lewis addressed Huberman directly. “You’ve met your match,” she said.

Part of the American Federation of Teachers, Chicago’s union unseated former president Marilyn Stewart last month and voted in Lewis, who promised to take a harder line against Huberman.

Led by Weingarten, the national branch of the union has taken a softer approach to its relationship with Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. And in New York, we’ve yet to hear rhetoric like Lewis’s from union president Michael Mulgrew.

I would like someone to explain to me how, HOW BILL GATES is a guest speaker at the AFT Convention in Seattle on July 10th??? “..has taken a softer approach to its relationship with Secretary of Education Arne Duncan”. What a polite way of putting it….

“Our opponents have deep pockets and shallow morals.” I like that line!

  • Ellen

Do you believe this…..Ms. Lewis did not use any buzz words! there was no mention of robust, of invigorated, of forward thinking, of a new paradigm. I bet she was never schooled by McKinsey. Hallelujah….someone who talks intelligently, who like a real person, wants to improve our education system for our children. Now that’s an innovation

The UFT’s Mulgrew is Weingarten’s boy. I wonder if he has the ability to think for himself. Lewis has the guts and the right attitude for the job.

    Queens Teacher,

Mr. Pie-in-the-Face is desperate to appear as a great philanthropist and savior of the neediest of the needy, while the AFT (Mrs. W) is desperate not to appear stubbornly resistant to change. Stop me if I’m getting warm.

What’s missing is integrity and intelligence. ‘Deep pockets, shallow morals’ is too kind for many of these elitist, outlandishly misguided, simplistic, misanthropic, self-apotheosizing ideologues.

The AFT should CANCEL Gates’ appearance immediately.

  • Pogue

What could the AFT possibly be getting out of his appearance other than some free Vista software?

    Karen Lewis gets it!

  • I noticed that…

Karen Lewis may be the union leader that will definitely shake up the system in Chicago and will make other union leaders in other states look at her for guidance and true leadership. We need someone bold who will not talk through both sides of their mouth to the members and will bring public education back into the classroom of America. I truly feel that she and other union leaders should band together and fight fiercely to get back what was taken away – the right to provide an education to every child in every public school.

Maybe Randi can learn something from Karen. She does not mince words!

I look forward to seeing Karen and her CORE members fight the injustice of all the reforms in Chicago. A change is truly going to happen in Chicago and it’s not going to be Obama’s Change, not with Karen as the CTU President.

Good Luck Karen, I’m in your corner!

Ms. Lewis is the real deal. We need more like her and we need to support them to keep things real and transparent. We need to end the plantation politics within AFT!

Finally a burst of light ,clarity and determination at the end of a hideous dark tunnel.
Congratulations Sister Lewis. The victory of Chicago’s teachers is an inspiration to those of us who have not succumbed to the Bloomberg/Klein/DOE( and their paramours, our “”union”".the UFT)
imposition of fear, dazed confusion and suicidal apathy.
As you know the UFT is by far the largest local in the AFT and for all intents and purposes controls the AFT.They are the militant comrades probable ideological mentors and co-enforcers of the policy of fanatic and constant sell-out to corporate interests of Chicago’s UPC.
They long ago ceased to function as a labor union in any tangible sense.Conditions in NYC’ schools are nightmarish and get worse day by day.
We understand that you have tough road in front of you.Even so we request your assistance.to be even more frank (not to mention realistic) we beg your help.LET US WORK TOGETHER TO BUILD A MILITANT AND EFFECTIVE NATIONAL TEACHER’S UNION. In Solidarity Al Zucker
