When I visited KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy, there were posters plastered all over the school offering prizes (Gap and Old Navy gift cards) to get new families to apply. I think someone is being naive to think that’s novel. And that’s at KIPP, where (all chorus together) “all KIPP schools have long waiting lists,” according to Paul Tough in the NYT.

CarolineSF – that makes sense. Fabricating a demand by offering awards will help “prove” to the State and its citizens that more Charter Schools are needed to meet this demand.

Is charter school funding rising while funding for other public schools is falling? Or is funding for other public schools going increasingly to the retired? I think it is the latter.
“It is true that differing start dates for age upon kindergarten enrollment make comparisons btw traditional public schools and charters unfair. Frankly, however, the system should give public schools more leeway in this area.”
