Howdy,

Overall this media blitz of how "new teachers" / "junior teachers" are best, more committed etc. is a farce. Looking at the statistics from the New York Teaching Fellows website you see their dedication to remain in the system isn't all bread and roses as they'd like us to believe:

*92% of all Fellows who begin teaching complete the first year, 73% of Fellows will teach at least three years, and half will teach at least five years.

http://www.nyctf.org/about/history.html

I guess those of us who chose to teach from outside this program and have been in the system for 10 years or more aren't as "serious" or caring as professionals as these younger more "caring" professionals are. And what about the senior teachers who chose to remain in closing schools in the less affluent areas of the city? Once they fall into the ATR pool they become a liability that the higher ups shun and have continued to try to boot out of the system.

What a pathetic joke.

Peace,

Jeff

Follow the first link and read the article, especially the part where a principal discusses ATRs.

They are in chronically shortage areas, SpEd and Sciences. Newly opened Small schools can hire 50% new staff and the rest of the 50% can be hired according to their needs, which usually translates to no old staff or ATRs for that matter.

If layoffs of 8500 are as imminent as Klein & co are saying- and there are ATRs who need schools- then why are these programs accepting ANYONE?
