Washington Irving HS was downsized by removing the most successful, preexisting, small learning community in the building and by creating a separate school out of it. Among the students who left were some of the highest attending and highest scoring students in the building. In the last two years, Irving has had major gains in test scores. Irving like many other remaining large schools has received a high percentage of high need students. We continue to assert that large schools offer the expertise to address high need issues. Through our business partnerships, UFT Teacher Center, and dedicated staff we hope to continue to offer a diverse program to what we hope will be an ever increasing heterogeneous population.

How did the NYCDOE downsize Washington Irving? Did it encourage a lot of students to transfer to vocational/GED programs for over-age, under-credited students? Did it restrict the number who entered 9th grade in the first place? If our public schools only exist to educate students, it's important to find out what happened to students caught up, or locked out, in the support program set up for a school.

Really! If one wants to help a poorly performing school do much, much better, one could just eliminate all the students entirely and then just admit a few whose 8th grade scores predicted stellar high school work.
