MARGIN NOTES

Nearly 6,000 students offered specialized high school seats

Thousands of eighth grade students across the city have been waiting for today, when they found out if they made the rosters of the city’s highly competitive specialized schools.

The Department of Education reports that 5,898 students made the cut this year for the city’s nine specialized high schools, eight of which offer seats to students based on their entrance exam scores. The exception, Fiorello LaGuardia High School, admits students based on their auditions, as well as their grades and exam scores. The deadline for accepting these schools’ offers is February 23.

Already, parents are emailing to ask what the lowest scores were that gained students admission to each of the schools. If you happen to know, please post in the comments section.

A chart breaking down the race/ethnicity of the admitted students is below.

CHANCELLOR KLEIN ANNOUNCES SPECIALIZED HIGH SCHOOL ADMISSIONS RESULTS

Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein today announced that 5,898 eighth graders have received an offer to attend one of the City’s nine specialized high schools beginning in September 2010. Offers to eight of the schools are based on the results of the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test, a competitive exam taken by approximately 27,000 students this year. Admission to a ninth school, Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, is based on a rigorous audition and a review of academic records.

The specialized high schools that admit students based on the results of the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) are Bronx High School of Science; The Brooklyn Latin School; Brooklyn Technical High School; High School for Mathematics, Science and Engineering at City College; High School of American Studies at Lehman College; Queens High School for the Sciences at York College; Staten Island Technical High School; and Stuyvesant High School.

“It is a major accomplishment to be admitted to one of our city’s specialized high schools,” Chancellor Klein said. “I congratulate all of the students who received an offer and those who took on the challenge of applying.”

This year, 5,261 students received an offer to a specialized school based on their exam scores, similar to the 5,246 students who received one last year. Students applying to LaGuardia may receive an offer to more than one program at the school, as well as an offer to one of the other specialized high schools. In all, 1,000 students received one or more offers to LaGuardia. Of these 1,000 students, 363 are also receiving an offer to one of the testing schools.

Students began receiving notification of their offers yesterday. The deadline to accept an offer is February 23. Students who do not accept their offer by February 23 will forfeit their seats and be entered into the main round of the high school admissions process. Students who do not receive an offer are automatically entered into the main round. Results of the main round will be announced in late March.

Ms. Scared, a friend of mine got into Stuy last year with a 562, so that’s quite impossible.

  • josue

i believe in my shsat classes that my teacher told me the cutoff score was 560 for stuyvesant. 9 days!

  • Bruce

God, let this coming week go faster! I’m thinking about the results every single day, counting down the days left. >;l

  • josue

yeah me to Bruce. I just feel like the day goes by faster when my day is really busy. 8 days! Hope i get into stuy, i’ll let evryone know with my score on Feb 11

Yep, tons of homework here. I’ll also post my results as well.

  • TK

My teachers are giving much more home work on purpose to try to keep us students from worrying too much. But its  NOT working. I’m just getting much more nervous!

  • anon

Hey TK, did your school make everyone sign up for the SHSAT?

  • Ms. Scared

Anon, I don’t think schools can make you sign up for the SHSAT. I know a few kids who decided not to take it in public schools.

  • josue

yeah Anon. It was a choice if you wanted to take the shsat. No one had to if they didn’t want to.

  • Ms. Scared

    oh my gosh….3.5 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • josue

3days!!!! are we going to get the results last period on friday or like in the middle of the day???

  • Ellen

did anyone else but me notice that the Chancellor’s name is not KLEIN but BLACK?

  • Ms. Scared

I think we’re going to get them last period. Why would they give it to us mid day?

    And yes, they change chancellors

  • TK

Anon- surprisingly NO! I go to a catholic school but I’m not catholic. I mean, only about 30 kids took the test. But there are only 60 8th graders.

  • josue

2 days!!! so its certain that we are going to get our results on Friday? Because i don’t want to have my hopes up in 2 days just to have dissapointment.

  • anonymous

    Definitely Friday.

  • josue

    ok then anonymous

  • bertha

My school said we are getting the results on Feb 10th.

  • TK

OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!! MY GUIDANCE COUNSELOR DECIDES NOT TO COME TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND SHE’S THE ONE GETTING THE RESULTS!

  • TK

    josue- congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Rob

My son just got accepted to Brooklyn Latin with a score of 487. He had Brooklyn Tech as his third choice and Latin as his Fourth. It seems Brooklyn Tech cut off is more than 487.

  • Bruce Ramassar

Hey everyone, congratulations to your acceptances. I got a 508 into Brooklyn Tech, my third choice. I am glad, even though I didn’t get into my 2nd or 3rd choice because I was also accepted into Laguardia and Frank Sinatra. To Rob, yes, Brooklyn Tech’s cutoff seems higher now. I’m probably really close to the cutoff.

  • samantha greene

bronx sci.!!!! Just got into bs wth a 549!! !i woudnt hv been so happy but every single one of my friends got into bs!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/Aallybabyfaithful AllisonM

  • Rob

    Congrats! Bruce.

  • ueth

i got in tech with a 559. blah; stuys cutoff was like a 565! so close. just one more question right… imma try to go to stuy and begg them to accept me…

  • ueth

and also, i got my results in 3rd period! i was depressed the whole 4th… -sigh-

  • rf

Ueth, come to the Brooklyn Tech open house and pick up an application for Gateway to Medicine. Go up and visit the Gateway room too. Here’s the description on the Tech website:
    http://www.bths.edu/majordesc/gateway.jsp
It’s the only 4-year major at Tech and it’s very rigorous.

  • Adam

My daughter just got accepted into Laguardia and Brooklyn Latin. I told her not to put down Brooklyn Tech because I haven’t been that impressed by it. I am a teacher and find it to be an over-crowded, somewhat uninspired environment. But I do recognized it has a wonderful reputation and is a great match for a lot of children. My daughter is very artistic (has blue hair, writes poetry and plays the electric bass), so I felt like sending her to BT would be a squashing of her true self. She had the SSHAT score to get into BT, but in the end it won’t matter as she signed the acceptance to LaG within 15 seconds of finding out. Those of you that are weighing acceptance to LaG vs BT or Stuy, etc, I would consider who your child really is as a person. If they wil enjoy a competitive academic environment more than an artistic experience then BT, Stuy are the way to go. If they seem to be soul searching wanderers like my daughter, it seems LaG would be a better fit.

  • Roberta

Adam, I hope you toured Brooklyn Tech before making that judgment. My daughter goes there, and it is anything but uninspired. And it’s no more overcrowded than the rest of the “good” high schools–there are the same 34 kids in a class as at Stuy and at La Guardia as well. It’s a big, beautiful building with great facilities. I have heard so many people expressing worries about kids getting lost at Brooklyn Tech–except from the kids. The school handles its size very well. When I went to parent-teacher conferences in October, every teacher knew her. And I can track all of her grades as well as her attendance via the Daedalus system. Yes, it’s a very big school but with the size comes a huge variety of course offerings and extracurriculars, including every conceivable sport and many creative outlets for artists of all kinds. And with its size comes a huge variety of students, including many with blue hair and lots of creativity. My daughter is in a citywide chorus and was disappointed not to have been accepted at La Guardia, but she has no regrets at Tech.

I know that many of the students at Tech had hoped to be accepted elsewhere, and I think that, almost always, they come to see what’s great about the school. I hope that parents and students with an SHSAT acceptance there come to the open house, walk around, talk to faculty and students, and check it out.

  • Ms. Scared

I got into Stuyvesant! IM SO HAPPY! :D

  • Sandra Chen

    I am so upset.
    My score’s a 564 and I didn’t get accepted to Stuyvesant.
I get Bronx Science even though it was my second choice
I really really want to get into Stuyvesant
Should I tell my student counselor and ask them?
    Please help!!

  • Adam

    @Roberta

I was speaking more as a teacher than a parent. I have spent a lot of time in BT and know quite a few of the teachers, as well as some AP’s. It’s a good school. I am not saying otherwise. Just that judging by the students I have taught that have gone there and seen graduate etc, I wonder if it is the right place for all. It is competitive and that’s a plus. I also like that it offers a lot of possibilities to the students. However, (as an example), I think Brooklyn Latin has a more unique experience. The cut-off number for the SSHAT is lower than BT by a few points, but percentage wise has a much lower acceptance rate. It offers a strong IB program with a belief in old school humanities education (as well as 4 years of Latin!). My point being that there are a lot of schools out there. Some of the other specialized schools offer experiences that seem richer and more interesting than Brooklyn Tech. My daughter will go to Laguardia over Brooklyn Tech simply because I really didn’t see her being happy with there.

  • TK

@ Sandra Chen- You should still go there. There really is no difference between the schools. Cheer up !!!!!!

  • spring

550, admitted to HSAS@Lehman which he ranked first (also Bard and La)

  • Ariel

I’m going to Bronx Science, yea. At first I cried the whole night at the unjust fact that I was so close (about a question away) from getting into Stuy, but me & my friend are working out a weird rule thing so i guess its alright. And I’ll be taking the test again next year, in hopes of Stuy, (I’m going to get 801 for sureeeee :) the only school for me!

  • raza

got in 2 bk Latin and bard ,cant choose which 2 go 2!

  • ueth

my dad knows this woman. and the woman’s husband does these shsat stuff. today she called my dad saying that her husband said that stuy’s cutoff score was 610. i find that impossible seeing my friend who got a 580, got to stuy. my dad says that “they look at your report card grade and accepted some people who got less than 610… i find 610 as the cutoff impossible, do any of you people do? :l

  • ueth

sandra; you should apply for the discovery program. if you do not know what it is; flip to pg 17 of the shsat student guidebook (the skinny one). i will also apply for the discovery program and i hope you do too.  ” better to try than not do anything” is what i always say.

i’ve heard from people that the discovery program is like a summer school thing. you have to take classes during the summer and depending on your performance, they will choose to either accept you into your requested school, or not.

there is also the review procedure on the same page.

you should check in with your guidance counsler for some more info…

  • ueth

and thanks rf for the recommendation. if i dont succeed after begging to get accepted into stuy, then i will surely take your offer since i am aiming for a job in the medical field.

  • rf

Ueth, they will be giving out applications for Gateway at the open house on Wednesday.
