Remainders: To help Haiti, a lift on the bake sales ban

    The NYS Regents authorize all of the other schools…private, public, career, tech ed, nursing, colleges and universities…why would it be wrong for them to authorize for charter schools?
    Given the sad state of affairs with our NY State legislator….Bruno, Espada, Seminerio, Monserrat and how many others (has Duncan ever been in NY State for more than six minutes at a time)…why would it be better to let legislators authorize schools now? that’s just plain dumb…..in NY State any way.

    The Detroit teachers approved, by a 3-2 vote a contract that requires each teacher, in essense, to loan the Detroit school system $10,000 over the 2 1/2 year length of the contract (repayable when the teacher leaves the system), the State-appointed fiscal monitor was about to declare the district in default placing all contracts in jeopardy, in exchange the contract contains a number of provisions increasing teacher participation in school decision-making.

    The recall petition, and a challenge to the contract ratification vote is being carried on by the contract opponents. Was the threat of default real? What would have happened under default? Is the contract a better deal that the result of default?

    Teachers in Detroit have tough decisons, decisions that may not be limited to Detroit, especially if Washington does not authorize another stimulus, and, if calls for revising current pensions increase …

    The big news this year, of course, was the expansion of the number of films nominated for best picture from five to ten. If only they could’ve contracted the broadcast down to five — minutes.
