Finally, a bold move by a governor who came in as a champion of charters then sat back as their funding was cut capriciously putting it at less than 70% of that of a regular public school. thank you governor Paterson, for finally growing a spine and standing up for public charter schools!

NYSUT president, Dick Iannuzzi, thinks nothing of value will get done by the state legislature on RttT legisation in the next seven days. In fact, if his organization and its largest chapter, NYC UFT quit trying to scuttle the effort, the legislature could pass a strong bill in seven minutes. He also found his SAT word of the day in describing the charter cap issue: "bogus", using it with at least the Times Union and the Daily Politics blog. President Obama disagrees since he called on states to "lift charter caps" and designed his program accordingly.

While not comparing Charter Schools vs other schools in districts in terms of Special Student enrollment, one are where Charters were sorely lacking was their exempting Special Ed students into their schools.

This article here shows how small schools and very possibly Charter Schools to a higher degree not addressing the educational needs of the most difficult to teach by excluding them.

It is a disturbing that we see across the US where it seems that at state and district levels, aid allocated to be used for Special Needs students is used for anything other than providing education to Special Needs students.

It is not quite right to say "Overall, district schools enroll more [special education] students." Some district schools do and some do not. It would be more accurate to say the districts overall enroll a greater percentage of special education students than do charter schools, but this is comparing apples to oranges.

It would be very helpful if someone would provide the percentage of special education students in each school in a district, rank them, and then show where the charter schools within that district fall. Of course, lists would have to be organized by grade levels for a fair comparison with similar charter schools. Does anyone know where that information can be found?
