Cool. Didn't even need to close the library. ;-)

Under Principal Levy's leadership, the students have shown steady progress in both the ELA and MATH scores over the last three years from a number of points of view: median proficiency score, percent of kids proficient. And the rate of improvement is accelerating, now in the top quartile both citywide and peergroupwide, now in both ELA AND Math.

Rock on! Principal Levy doesn't just speak "Internet." He speaks "Effectiveness." And no, this is not a paid endorsement.

(See IS 339's School Progress Reports (Google "NYC DOE X339"), much as I rag on them).

When my teachers, Mr. Valia and Mr. Portelos came back from a visit to IS 339, they were totally inspired to create a similar environment for my school, IS 49 in Staten Island. We are a school of Science and Technology, and although we teach exciting and innovative applications to our students, we have now begun the journey of learning the language of interent with our teachers. My tech team has created gmail accounts for all students and staff. We have eliminated reproducing hard copies of vital faculty information such as the staff handbook, the training for Child Abuse and Suicide Prevention, as well as Right To know information by sending them out via email. Our next goal is to have much more collaboration between staff using the internet. Your school's practice is encouraging, I am definitely going to set up a visit if you permit. Thank you for sharing.

I attended Dot-to-Dot and found Principal Levy more inspiring than any of the tech gurus who are paid to deliver keynotes at conferences and large PDs. His school is a shining example of how transformative technology can be. I urge all principals in the city - especially those intimidated by technology-- to visit IS339 and see why every child in our school system should have a five pound laptop instead of a 60 pounds of text books. In the next contract, the UFT should offer an extra 30 minutes of technology training a day for all teachers to help train staff and administrators how to use these 21st century tools.

Great post Mr. Levy.
