		<description>&quot;Parent Involvement/Parent Training&quot; has starkly differing definitions ... one view is training a parent on how to assist their child, checking homework, keeping in contact w/ their child&#039;s teacher, becoming a knowledgeable &quot;consumer,&quot; and working w/ their school on fund-raising and other collaborative efforts, the other, is the parent as advocate, the parent as partner in developing and implementing school policy, and, occasionally as an oppositional member of a school leadership team.

The UFT supports &quot;Parent Outreach Committees&quot; in their borough offices - the monthly meetings in Brooklyn attract 50-75 parent leaders each month, including some CEC members ... with, not surprisingly, an empower the parent philosophy ... ironically some of the regular attendees could run rather than be students in the undefined CUNY center.

There is a rich literature re parent involvement and many outstanding models:
