Bloomberg, via satellite: “We are going into uncharted territory”

picture-231

Mayor Bloomberg appeared via satellite at a press conference in Albany today. I watched via webcast.

As Governor Paterson said he will give the state Senate a last chance to operate at 7 o’clock tonight, Mayor Bloomberg outlined his plan for what happens if mayoral control expires at midnight. The plan was, by his own admission, murky and short on details.

First, he said, “the lawyers take over in New York City”:

Every decision – from personnel decisions to policy decisions — will be subject to litigation and uncertainty. That’s no ways to run a school system. It will be like a nightmare flashback to the days when politics ruled the schools and our children suffered the consequences.

Critics of mayoral control and people who are familiar with the pre-2002 school system have disputed this characterization, saying chaos would not ensue if mayoral control expires.

Governor Paterson echoed Bloomberg’s concerns, saying that if mayoral control expires the city’s public schools will descend into “total chaos.”

Bloomberg, speaking via satellite from City Hall at a press conference in Albany, said he will work to “shield the system from the chaos the Senate is experiencing and is planning to inflict on city schoolchildren”:

Make no mistake about it: We will not allow our schools to be padlocked or summer school to be canceled. Summer school starts tomorrow, no ifs ands or buts. The kids that are going to summer school need help. And we are going to provide it.

We’ll keep things running to the best of our ability and deal with questions as they arise, that is our responsibility. But we are going into uncharted territory, and there’s no crystal ball. Our job will be to try to shield new york children and their parents from the chaos to the best of our ability and continue to press the Senate for action.

The mayor should have prepared a contingency plan. Instead he promises chaos if he doesn’t get his way. Should we be surprised that this egomaniac who buys off the city council to run for a third term would behave this way? Why can’t the teacher’s union offer an alternative vision/ plan for running the city schools? Let’s start a form of grassroots organizing around schools. Let the school leadership teams have some real power for a change. The administrative details could be handled by the city and state using previously established protocols while school communities can make curricular-related decisions. Enough of corporate bureaucrats! Power to students, teachers and parents. Let mayoral control expire.

I bet Bloomy is broadcasting from a concrete bunker below City Hall in anticipation of the rioting, looting, and chaos that will ensure should the mayor have his crayons taken away.

Count me as one of the 8.3M New Yorkers (19.3M statewide) deeply APPALLED by the lack of leadership, wisdom, selflessness, and high-mindedness — and lack of faith in democracy and the citizenry — being shown by politicians of all stripes, all houses of government, and both parties, over the past few weeks.

If the last few weeks haven’t but INCREASED public support for term limits, I’d be greatly surprised.

We need lawmakers and executives willing to put the people’s business above their own self-interest. It’s a simple standard, but evidently out of reach for most pols.

We have nothing to fear but fear-mongers themselves.

November can’t come soon enough. TROW DA BUMS OUT.

While I was quite upset with the current bill passed by the State Assembly, I think that if the present law expires(sunsets) it will create a situation potentially much worse than the current law provides. I have had my disagreement with the Klein administration, and I believe that the members of the PEP should have fixed terms so that they are free to exercise their judgement on certain school related matters. The fact is that there have been so many changes systemically under Mayor Bloomberg that it would take months to alter or change procedures that would impact individual schools and their ability to see to the needs of the students and staffs. Therefore I hope that the State Senators can come to a compromise or offer an extension if allowable. I also think the the Mayor is wrong in the rhetoric he is stating and will probably worsen not resolve the situation. I believe that Senators such as Mr. Sampson can not be bullied into a decision…

All Bloomberg needs is a German Shepherd sitting next to him on that TV screen and we’ve got Woody Allen’s “Sleeper” all over again.
