Usually I have sympathy for teachers, but this agreement makes me very angry. It was obviously done for the vacation interests of teachers and not in the best interests of New York City public school children. All this does is shorten the number of instructional days by one. No one is going to send their child to school for that Monday half day.

It is very sensible to have teachers report to school early to get organized without the students there. Now that time has been cut by one day. Teachers have the summers off--why is it so important for them to come to school after Labor Day? Teachers should grow up and do what is best for students and getting their year off to a good start.

This calendar thing is idiocy, but I read the principal letter posted here and it refers to the pension deal it is linked to, and THAT sounds like a great idea. The public employee unions are bleeding New York dry with pension and health benefits and the public doesn't realize what's going on. Pensions that cost NYC $1.7 billion six years ago are now projected to cost $6 billion next year. That's what Randi means when she says she wants "more money to go into the classroom, or at least her member's pension accounts." At least someone like the Mayor is trying to bring attention to this so I was pleased to see the staggering costs of pensions mentioned.

And for such obvious lack of forethought and logistical acumen, legislators are being asked to extend mayoral control? This should be a wake-up call for Albany. Bloomberg and Klein prove once again they're just winging it, and school governance should not be renewed in such circumstances.
