I worked in one of those divider rooms. Every time the teacher next door yelled at a kid, the ones in my room would start laughing.

Thank you for painting very realistic images. Students spend over a decade of their lives in schools. The least city government can do is create a atmoshpere of respect for education instead of one reeking with smells, holes in walls, no running water or soap, dirty classrooms and those things that crawl or have long tails. Does our mayor work in such conditions? Why should teachers and our students have to be subjected to it? A former assistant principal of mine once told me that the classroom should also be a place where students feel like they are in a safe and secure place and the classrooms should be "inviting" because many of our students live in hell at home. He was right. Schools should reflect that.

Thank you for this stirring piece. I wish Sec. Duncan would read it. Reform? We need safe classes for our children. We need to hire teachers back.

Great piece. Of course, the aim of the BloomKlein regime is to overcrowd your school (and many others) until it finally can't succeed, and then close it, get rid of the senior teachers, and start 5 new schools in the same building.

You forgot to mention that the room is soaking wet when the air conditioners happent to be working and they are left on high all night. You can't sit on the seats and you can't write on the boards then.

You also neglected the floors that we slip on whenever it rains or the hip boots needed to navigate the puddles, also in the rain. One of my colleagues had to teach with an open umbrella after the snow leaked off his roof because the leak came inside the trailer.I gave ths school construction a tour of the problems last year but they were never fixed. Now, extra walls, I heard that they were turning the trailer bathrooms into resource rooms and special education classes. There was already one seat there so they would just have to squeeze in a few more. Great article. Glad to see it here.

Complaints, complaints. You seem to have enough empty bathrooms to be able to handle a few charter schools. And why not explore double decker trailers? Or just get some of those buses they have in England.
