On the contrary, I think there were hopes that Albany could make progress on both reforming mayoral control as well as the progressive issues that are priorities of both the Democrats and their constituents. I am hoping now that progress on those issues will be harder to achieve, the Assembly Democrats will redouble their efforts to make the type of improvement in schools governance that you, me and their constituents seek. While the Speaker has been showing signs of supporting the mayor's viewpoint, I am hoping more of his colleagues push back. It would be shame if we lost on school governance as well. The strategy is as old as the hills: pit the legitimate civil rights of different groups against each other in a zero sum game and the powers that be stay put.
