Not so fast on thinking Mayoral Control is a lock with Republicans controlling the Senate Those like Frank Padavan want stronger powers for community supeintendents.

Not at all Patricia. I did not mean to imply the issues were mutually exclusive. On the contrary, I think there were hopes that Albany could make progress on both reforming mayoral control as well as the progressive issues that are priorities of both the Democrats and their constituents. I am hoping now that progress on those issues will be harder to achieve, the Assembly Democrats will redouble their efforts to make the type of improvement in schools governance that you, me and their constituents seek. While the Speaker has been showing signs of supporting the mayor's viewpoint, I am hoping more of his colleagues push back. It would be shame if we lost on school governance as well.

I trust that my friend Patrick Sullivan doesn't not mean to imply that the issues of the right to gay marriage and the need for truly democratic public education reform are mutually exclusive. The strategy is as old as the hills: pit the legitimate civil rights of different groups against each other in a zero sum game and the powers that be stay put.

A pox on both your houses -- state senate democrats & republicans -- for letting it come to this!

No law can be passed on mayoral control unless the Assembly consents. Perhaps now that gay marriage and all the progressive agenda is gone, the Assembly Dems will pull together stand up for what their constituents want on the issue of schools governance.

NOW can we get a City Council do-over on term limits !?!

I do not mean this flippantly. A few months ago, the buzz was that if Bloomberg got his third term, there would then be additional pressure to reign (sic) in Mayoral Control. And now?
