There’s plenty more I’d like to write about today, but right now I am going to pop some popcorn and settle in for the big fight: NY1′s televised debate between Harlem charter school operator Eva Moskowitz and United Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten.

The debate between the two controversial women is set to broadcast live on Dominic Carter’s “Road to City Hall” show, which starts at 7 p.m. It will air again tonight at 10 p.m. You can also listen online at the same times using NY1′s audio stream.

  • lies!

Lie #1 from Eva Moskowitz: 7,000 teachers applied for her teaching positions. Only true if you consider the unsolicited emails sent to Teach for America alums by Sheila Lopez as teacher applications.

If 7,000 teachers applied for that first batch of teaching positions, Harlem Success HR must be pretty bad considering that they fired two or three teachers and an AP within months of the first school opening a couple years ago.

  • Friend of HSA Staff

She’s a good speaker but a terrible liar! She fired the principal of HSA 1 midyear this year for absolutely no reason!!!!! Eva made herself the principal even though she has no admin degree and very little ed experience. The school is being run by a political hack. Ask her about teacher turnover at her school!!

  • Friend of HSA Staff

And she does not giver her teachers 3 preps a day!

  • lies!

    lie #2:
Eva Moskowitz and her $250k+ salary (not counting the “personal assistants” and her attorney husband are not middle class!

I wish we could email Dominic Carter to suggest questions for those two.

  • Friend of HSA Staff

How is she making her teachers better? Unionize the HSAs!

  • lies!

“salary is considered a private matter”

    with public funding?

Not all teachers make more than DOE teachers. (I’m not even considering the fact that there is no one with any real amount experience in their system.) The principals and APs almost certainly don’t make more than their DOE counterparts!

  • Friend of HSA Staff

“in the school by 7am and out by 8 o’clock”

What the hell???? Doesn’t she have young kids to spend quality time with????? Why is this lady supposedly working 13 hour days?

  • Friend of HSA Staff

“Happy to have you at our school.”

Randi, show up and get them to unionize!

  • Queens Teacher

I was shocked at Randi’s behavior. She talked to Eva like she was a child. Randi also skirts every question or topic. The union rep. and district rep. at my school behave in the same manner. Always condecending and stirring trouble. It’s like they have some class where they learn how to talk down to all of us. I lose faith in my union every day.

However. I do believe that both of these individuals want students to succeed. But they both need to give a little bit. We need a contract that allows for more preparation time and collaboration between teachers and we need to be evaluated for our effectiveness. Lifetime jobs are unacceptable. I consider myself a good teacher who keeps getting better. But, will I eventually stop trying like many of the teachers in my building? It seems so hopeless. We need people supporting us to excel and we need to know that there are people who could do our jobs better. I would like to believe that charter school administrators strive for this type of professional environment, but I am realistic enough to know that is not always the case.

  • prep time

@queens teacher: there will NEVER be a contract that gives more prep time. if you compare your working conditions to that of the HSA teachers, you would realize that in reality you have far more prep time. The difference is that you can prep after the students leave (say between 3:15 and 5:00) whereas the HSA teachers and their supposed 3 preps are working with students until after 5. Of course, that 3:15 to 5:00 prep time that you might CHOOSE to use will never be respected by the union haters like Moskowitz.
