		<description>Please don&#039;t refer to the UFT as &quot;powerful&quot;.  Perpetuating this myth plays into the hands of the some of the most anti-democratic elements of our society.  Powerful unions are the ones that have the right to strike - the ones that win economic benefits and workplace conditions so good that people line up down the block and around the corner when their employers advertise for workers.  Some such unions hold lotteries for those who want to become members.  UFT members quit their jobs in droves every year while the city runs expensive recruiting campaigns to replace them.  Powerful unions have low turnover.</description>
