Name those reformers

Diane Ravitch’s name suggestion for new reformers: Republicans

Diane Ravitch

Ravitch, the education historian, former Bush administration official (the elder Bush), and dean of the Joel Klein critic pool, offers a name for the nameless reformers at her Ed Week blog: Republicans.

She writes:

The Republican education experts and conservative think tanks have always wanted more accountability, more choice, merit pay, and a tough anti-union stance. Thus, it is one of the amusing ironies of our time that the people who now espouse this agenda call themselves “reformers” and are acclaimed as such by the national media. They are reformers indeed, but the reforms they are advocating and implementing come right out of the Republican playbook.

Update: An earlier version of this post suggested that Ravitch herself used to be a Republican. That’s not true; she was a Democrat when serving in the Bush administration and has been a registered Independent for the past 15 years.

“Republicans” may be an even better label than “idealocrats.”

Diane has always been a fierce Independent — and never a Republican, as far as I know.

If the ideas are good ones, why does it matter if they are shared by or even developed by Republicans?

  • Loren Steele

Ken, when the Republicans come up with any good education ideas let me know. Nothing Joel Klein does actually improves the education of our students. Republicans have done for education what they’ve done for science…

  • Ken

Loren, I might not know when “the Republicans come up with any good education ideas”, because I don’t equate ideas with one of two political tribes. I am more interested in the ideas than the tribes. When we get too caught up with the tribes, we often end up with overheated, extreme statements. Re-read your comment for an example.

Im in agreement with Ken, the two schools of thought concept is keeping us boxed in and children will not benefit. There are too many people out there who spend their time looking from the outside in and politicizing education or just being critics. As an urban school principal, reform, in the sense that it is being currently used, refers to a shift from ‘talking’ to ‘doing’. I can be innovative and provide kids with a well rounded curriculum and still be accountable. I don’t fit into that ‘republican’ box and I don’t think Obama does either when he chose a ‘reformer’.

  • Loren Steele

Ken, Angea, I believe Obama has shown the type of reformer he is by appointing Linda Darling-Hammond to a leadership-consultative position. Reform should be based on educational, not corporate research. As a science teacher I spend a lot of time providing opportunities for my students to use and improve their critical thinking skills. I often wonder why any time I use my own critical thinking skills I am labeled as overheated and extreme. While the views I express are my own opinions, they have been formed and continuously adjusted by a rational and logical scientific process. The errant decisions made by our current political administration here in NYC and at the Federal level have not improved education, and in many cases have made it difficult to effect positive reform at the local level. Truth speaking to power is the patriotic and professional duty of parents and teachers, the 2 groups whose voices have only been paid lip service for the last 8 years. As a scientist and a teacher I have been villified by my elected leaders and their appointees. I didn’t make this personal, so don’t criticize me for finally standing up for myself and those like me.

Reform must be based on student outcome

  • Loren Steele

Student outcome of what? Educational research results in models that can be applied to the classroom. Student outcome is just data, which means nothing if you didn’t start with a measurable objective.
