Scary or brilliant?

To finance Xerox costs, a math teacher sells ad space on tests

New York City teachers who are getting smaller reimbursement checks this year could look to one California teacher for a new idea.

To finance photocopying costs when his school district cut funding, Tom Farber, an AP Calculus teacher, sells ad space on tests and quizzes. Parents and local businesses actually pay for ads, the Union Tribune reports:

Some are pithy one-liners, hawking the names of local businesses: “Brace Yourself for a Great Semester! Braces by Henry, Stephen P. Henry D.M.D.”

Others are inspirational quotes, like “Keep the company of those who seek the truth, and run from those who have found it – Vaclav Havel.”

So far, students and parents are reacting positively, although one student has a suggestion for advertisers:

“I’m always hoping that someone will sponsor it with a trig formula or something useful,” he said.

Cheers for this unique content. In some cases, the very best knowledge come from the posts one may not expect. So far, I decided not to give a lot of thought to posting comments on web log posts and have left comments even less. Taking note of your insightful report, may well motivate me to take action on a regular basis.

Stephen Hawking has been recently in the news for suggesting (if I have this right) that the universe could have originated without the assistance of God. Given his own sad condition, I can’t help wondering if he feels he could similarly get by without the assistance of God himself…
