Didn't you see the 14 year old public school kid the day before who testified against hte bill? She called Bloomberg a crook, these charter kids were far more articulate in their beliefs and they've got something specific to gain from more Klein. Klein's job is not about the "schools" in new york, it's about the "students." If charter schools are the only thing going right in the public schools in the poorest communities in new york, why would anyone want to get in the way of them getting a building, growing, or anything else, when there are such terrible schools still open. Unfortunately these bad schools aren't closed fast enough for the thousands of kids stuck in them each year, while they sit on charter school waiting lists. Plus, this wasn't expressing viewpoints of a teacher in class, it was letting kids express their own viewpoints after school. That seems like a real authentic civics lesson to me.

Good for them! Their arguments are logical and thoughtful and even if you disagree, you've got to give them credit for speaking their minds. The kids were empowered to have their voice heard, and that's what real education should be about.

This is a disgusting political manipulation of children.

But more to the point: charters should exist as COMPETITION to the conventional public schools. The involvement of the chancellor subverts this. Charter advocates, blinded by the support of Bloomberg and Klein don't see the danger.

If there is an extra "building" to be "given away" it should be used to relieve crowding in the public schools. By supporting charters the chancellor undermines his primary responsibility.

How would the DOE feel if a teacher brought a public school student to testify against term limits? Didn't the Chancellor just remind teachers that they should, under no circumstances, express theur own political viewpoints in class? Are the rules different in publicaly funded charter schools?
